A comprehensive review of recently released documents from the Jeffrey Epstein case has revealed that former Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s name appears in the files, but in a context that differs significantly from claims circulating on social media.
Recent viral posts, particularly on Instagram, have suggested that Qureshi was implicated in criminal activities associated with Epstein’s notorious gatherings. One Instagram video, which garnered over 10,000 likes, alleged that Qureshi’s presence in the files linked him to disturbing criminal behavior at Epstein’s events.
However, an examination of the actual documents reveals a more mundane explanation. Qureshi’s name appears in an email dated October 1, 2010, during his tenure as Foreign Minister in Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s administration. The email is an exchange between Jeffrey Epstein and Jes Staley, who was then a JPMorgan executive.
The correspondence shows that Qureshi was listed alongside numerous other international dignitaries, including representatives from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. Staley’s message to Epstein indicated that the financier might have an opportunity for a private audience with each of the listed officials, noting that security clearance had been arranged. Epstein’s simple reply to this information was: “That’s amazing.”
This email, contained in document EFTA01811353.pdf, makes no reference to parties, criminal activities, or personal relationships between Qureshi and Epstein. The context appears to be related to United Nations meetings, as diplomats from various nations were gathered in New York during this period.
The only other document in the Epstein files that mentions Qureshi is EFTA00148963.pdf, which simply quotes from his official address to the United Nations. In that speech, he accused India of meeting with and funding militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban and Baloch insurgent organizations—entirely unrelated to Epstein’s activities.
Fact-checkers have found no evidence of any personal connection between Qureshi and Epstein. There are no photographs documenting meetings between them, no direct communications, and no records indicating Qureshi ever attended any events hosted by Epstein.
The mischaracterization of Qureshi’s appearance in these documents highlights the dangers of selective information sharing on social media. The inflammatory allegations spread rapidly across multiple platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), despite lacking substantive evidence.
This incident occurs against the backdrop of increased scrutiny of the Epstein case following the court-ordered release of thousands of pages of documents in early 2024. The documents have revealed various prominent figures who had connections to Epstein, ranging from business relationships to more questionable associations.
For Pakistan, which continues to navigate complex diplomatic relationships globally, unfounded allegations against former high-ranking officials can have diplomatic repercussions. Qureshi served as Foreign Minister during a particularly sensitive period in Pakistan’s international relations, handling crucial dialogues with the United States, India, and various international organizations.
Media literacy experts emphasize that this case demonstrates the importance of consulting primary sources rather than relying on social media interpretations of complex legal documents. The selective presentation of information, without proper context, can lead to misleading narratives that rapidly gain traction online.
While the investigation into Epstein’s networks continues to uncover disturbing information about various individuals, the evidence indicates that Qureshi’s inclusion in these documents appears to be incidental and related solely to his official diplomatic position at the time.
