Nigerian Cancer Society Seeks Investigation into Alleged Fraudulent Cancer Diagnosis Claims

The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has issued a strong condemnation against social media personality Blessing Okoro, known as “Blessing CEO,” for allegedly fabricating a cancer diagnosis to solicit donations from the public. The society has called on security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure accountability.

In an official statement released by NCS National Director of Publicity, Bashir Mohammed Ranccas, the organization described the alleged actions as “deeply unfortunate, unethical, and detrimental to the fight against cancer in Nigeria.”

According to reports circulating in public forums, Blessing Okoro had launched a fundraising campaign based on claims of a serious health condition, successfully generating significant financial contributions from sympathetic Nigerians. However, subsequent developments have raised serious doubts about the authenticity of her claims, with allegations suggesting she deliberately misrepresented her health status to mislead donors.

The controversy has sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria, including demands for accountability, calls for the refund of donations, and requests for a comprehensive investigation, given the sensitive nature of cancer and how such actions could erode public trust in legitimate fundraising campaigns for cancer patients.

“Cancer is a delicate condition that requires sincerity, compassion, and responsible handling,” the NCS emphasized in their statement. “Any attempt to exploit such an illness for personal gain not only misleads the public but also undermines the credibility of genuine patients and discourages support for those truly in need.”

The alleged fraud comes at a particularly challenging time for cancer care in Nigeria, where patients already face numerous obstacles including limited treatment facilities, high costs of care, and inadequate insurance coverage. False claims of this nature potentially divert critical resources away from legitimate patients struggling with diagnosis and treatment.

The NCS has indicated it will be proactively engaging with relevant security agencies to ensure the matter receives proper investigation. This unusual step reflects the seriousness with which the medical community views exploitation of cancer diagnoses for financial gain.

In response to the incident, the society has also urged all cancer patients and their families nationwide to seek guidance, verification, and support directly from the NCS, particularly when considering public fundraising initiatives or seeking access to care. This recommendation aims to protect vulnerable patients and ensure that assistance reaches those genuinely in need.

The society reminded potential donors and partners to exercise vigilance and support only verified, legitimate channels, emphasizing that “trust, accountability, and integrity remain essential in the collective fight against cancer.”

To address these concerns moving forward, the NCS highlighted its dedicated committee responsible for patient support, intervention, and coordination of assistance. This committee works to ensure all cases receive transparent, professional, and credible handling, providing a reliable alternative to independent, unverified fundraising efforts.

Cancer remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with an estimated 124,815 new cases diagnosed annually according to the Global Cancer Observatory. Limited awareness, late presentation, and financial constraints continue to hamper effective treatment, making the responsible management of cancer-related charitable efforts particularly important.

The NCS, established to promote cancer control through advocacy, research, and patient support, continues to emphasize the importance of integrity in all cancer-related initiatives across the country.
