In a heated exchange caught on camera, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confronted a reporter from a pro-Trump media outlet who questioned her about the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The confrontation has quickly spread across social media platforms and political circles.

The incident occurred when Alison Steinberg, a correspondent for LindellTV, approached Pelosi with questions implying the former Speaker was responsible for security failures during the Capitol attack. LindellTV is owned by Mike Lindell, the MyPillow CEO known for promoting conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election and his strong support of former President Donald Trump.

“Congresswoman Pelosi, are you at all concerned that the new January 6 committee will find you liable for that day?” Steinberg asked, referring to the House Republican-led investigation into the events of January 6.

When Steinberg followed with the question, “Why did you refuse the National Guard on January 6?” Pelosi responded forcefully, turning to point a finger at the reporter while telling her to “shut up.”

Pelosi immediately pushed back against the premise of the question. “I did not refuse the National Guard, the president didn’t send it! Why are you coming here with Republican talking points as if you’re a serious journalist?” she said.

Steinberg attempted to continue, saying, “The American people want to know. We still have questions.”

The video of the exchange was quickly circulated online after being posted by LindellTV on X (formerly Twitter). It gained significant traction when White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reposted it, along with pro-Trump media figures, politicians, Russian state media outlets, and various far-right websites.

The claim that Pelosi blocked National Guard assistance during the Capitol riot has been a persistent narrative in conservative circles despite being repeatedly debunked by factual investigations. The Associated Press and other news organizations have verified that as House Speaker, Pelosi had no authority to direct the National Guard’s deployment.

According to official records and testimony, both Pelosi and then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell actively called for military assistance, including National Guard support, while the Capitol was under attack on January 6, 2021.

Despite these facts, the narrative resurfaced in 2024 when former President Trump claimed during campaign appearances that Pelosi had “turned down” his offer to send “10,000 soldiers or National Guard” to protect the Capitol. This statement contradicts the official timeline and testimony about the events leading up to and during the Capitol riot.

The incident highlights the ongoing political divisions and competing narratives surrounding January 6, more than three years after the event. House Republicans launched a new investigation into the Capitol riot after gaining majority control of the chamber in the 2022 midterm elections, taking a markedly different approach than the bipartisan committee that operated during the previous Congress.

The rapid spread of the confrontation across social media platforms demonstrates how quickly such political moments can be amplified in today’s digital environment, particularly when they involve high-profile political figures like Pelosi, who remains a polarizing figure after stepping down from Democratic leadership following the 2022 midterms but continuing to serve as a representative from California.

For many observers, the exchange underscores the challenges facing public officials in an era of fragmented media landscapes where partisan outlets often approach figures with predetermined narratives rather than seeking clarification or factual information.

While I understand Pelosi’s frustration, telling a reporter to ‘shut up’ doesn’t seem like the best way to address false claims. A more constructive response could have been to calmly correct the record and reiterate the facts.
