When WIRED searched for information on “gay marriage,” no entry appeared in search results, but the system instead suggested an entry on “gay pornography.” This article contained the scientifically disputed claim that pornography exacerbated the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s by promoting behaviors that allegedly led to “rapid seroconversion rates.”
Similarly, Grokipedia’s entry on transgender topics twice uses the term “transgenderism,” widely considered pejorative in LGBTQ+ communities. The article refers to transgender women as “biological males” and emphasizes supposed conflicts regarding “women’s safety, privacy, and sex-based protections established to mitigate male-perpetrated violence.” The entry also prominently features a section suggesting social media acts as a “contagion” potentially increasing transgender identification.
WIRED reported that xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding these content concerns.
The launch represents a significant expansion of Musk’s AI ambitions beyond his company’s existing Grok chatbot.
