Insurance companies and drivers alike are being urged to remain vigilant amid a troubling rise in “crash for cash” scams involving mopeds, which have emerged as the latest tactic employed by fraudsters seeking to extract money through fabricated accidents.

The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) has detected a significant uptick in these sophisticated schemes where criminals deliberately orchestrate collisions with unsuspecting motorists. The fraudsters typically stage accidents at roundabouts, intersections, and during lane-changing maneuvers—scenarios where fault determination often favors the moped rider.

“These fraudsters have become increasingly sophisticated in their approach,” said Tom Hill, Detective Chief Inspector at the IFB. “They’re specifically targeting locations and situations where liability is more likely to fall on the other driver, making it difficult for victims to dispute their claims.”

In a typical scenario, the scammer will position their moped in a driver’s blind spot before deliberately making contact with the vehicle. Some perpetrators go as far as causing minor damage to their mopeds beforehand, then claiming the damage occurred during the staged accident. Following the collision, the fraudster often files exaggerated personal injury claims, seeking compensation for non-existent or greatly embellished injuries.

The financial impact of these scams extends beyond the immediate victims. Industry experts estimate that insurance fraud adds approximately £50 ($63) to every policyholder’s annual premium in the UK, contributing to the rising cost of coverage that many drivers already find burdensome.

What makes these moped scams particularly effective is the inherent vulnerability of two-wheeled vehicle operators, which tends to elicit sympathy from insurance adjusters. Additionally, the compact size of mopeds allows fraudsters to maneuver into positions that are difficult for dashboard cameras to capture clearly.

“The scammers are counting on drivers’ limited visibility and the natural assumption that a motorcyclist wouldn’t intentionally put themselves at risk,” explained Sarah Thompson, an insurance fraud specialist at Aviva. “This psychological aspect makes these scams particularly effective and challenging to identify.”

Insurance companies are adapting their investigation techniques in response to this emerging threat. Many insurers now employ specialized teams trained to identify suspicious patterns in moped-related claims. These teams look for red flags such as inconsistencies in accident descriptions, suspicious timing of claims, or multiple claims from the same individual or address.

For motorists, the IFB recommends several preventive measures to avoid becoming victims of these scams. Installing high-quality dashboard cameras with wide-angle lenses can provide crucial evidence in disputed cases. Drivers are also advised to maintain a safe distance from mopeds and motorcycles, particularly at junctions and roundabouts where these scams commonly occur.

“If you are involved in an accident that seems suspicious, it’s important to collect as much evidence as possible,” Hill advised. “Take photos of the scene, gather contact details from independent witnesses, and report any concerns to your insurer immediately.”

Law enforcement agencies have also intensified their focus on these schemes, with several successful prosecutions recorded in recent months. In Manchester, authorities recently dismantled a ring of fraudsters who had orchestrated over 30 moped-related insurance scams, resulting in fraudulent claims exceeding £300,000 ($380,000).

The insurance industry is calling for stronger deterrents, including harsher penalties for convicted fraudsters and improved information sharing between insurers to identify repeat offenders more quickly.

“This is organized crime that affects everyone through increased premiums,” said Mark Jenkins, Director of the Association of British Insurers. “We need a coordinated approach from insurers, law enforcement, and the public to combat these increasingly sophisticated scams.”

As these schemes continue to evolve, experts stress that awareness is the first line of defense. Both motorists and insurance professionals must remain alert to the tactics employed by these fraudsters, while the industry works toward more comprehensive solutions to this growing problem.
