MCMC Investigates 22 Individuals for False Claims About Global Energy Crisis

Malaysian authorities have intensified their crackdown on false information related to the global energy crisis, questioning 22 individuals as part of a broader investigation into misinformation spreading across digital platforms.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched 36 investigation papers examining alleged dissemination of false news on social media and other digital channels. The individuals under investigation, from various regions across Malaysia, have been summoned to provide statements to assist authorities in their ongoing inquiries.

Six of these investigation papers have already progressed to the next stage, being forwarded to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further legal review and potential prosecution. The individuals face serious consequences if found guilty, as the investigations fall under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 (approximately $120,000), imprisonment for a maximum of two years, or both upon conviction.

“MCMC takes seriously any misuse of social media and digital platforms intended to mislead the public through the dissemination of false information,” the commission stated. “Firm action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws.”

The enforcement campaign comes at a critical time when energy markets are experiencing significant volatility worldwide. Global oil prices have been fluctuating dramatically in recent months, affecting fuel costs and electricity generation in import-dependent nations like Malaysia. The energy crisis has sparked concerns about supply security, price stability, and the economic impact on both industries and consumers.

Malaysia, as a significant energy producer in Southeast Asia with substantial oil, gas, and palm oil industries, has a vested interest in maintaining accurate public discourse around energy matters.
