Detroit Lions fan Ryan Kennedy has filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, former NFL star Chad Ochocinco Johnson, and several media companies following a controversial incident at Ford Field last December.
The lawsuit, filed in Wayne County Circuit Court, stems from allegations that Kennedy used racial and derogatory slurs during a Lions-Steelers game on December 21, 2025 – claims Kennedy vehemently denies and which his attorneys say are unsupported by any evidence.
“Ryan Kennedy is not a racist. He’s not a criminal. He’s a victim,” said Jon Marko, the civil rights attorney representing Kennedy at a press conference Wednesday.
According to the legal complaint, Kennedy, a season ticket holder, was physically assaulted by Metcalf during the game when the Steelers receiver allegedly grabbed him by the shirt collar without provocation. Following the incident, Johnson appeared on the popular “Nightcap” podcast, co-hosted by Shannon Sharpe, where he reportedly accused Kennedy of calling Metcalf the “N-word” and directing misogynistic language toward Metcalf’s mother.
These accusations quickly gained traction when republished by major sports outlets including ESPN, Yahoo Sports, and USA Today, despite the apparent absence of audio or video evidence substantiating the claims. The viral spread of these allegations resulted in Kennedy receiving death threats and hate mail, while causing significant damage to his personal and professional reputation.
“What’s been said about me on national and international media is false and deeply hurtful,” Kennedy stated. “Being publicly labeled a racist based on something I did not say has caused serious damage to my family, business, reputation and has put my personal safety at risk.”
When questioned by reporters about what preceded the physical altercation, Marko described it as “normal heckling” but declined to provide specific details of what Kennedy may have said to Metcalf. He emphasized, “The only person that is responsible for Mr. Metcalf assaulting and battering a fan in front of the world is Mr. Metcalf.”
The lawsuit not only seeks substantial monetary damages exceeding $100 million but also demands court-ordered public retractions from all defendants. Kennedy’s legal team indicates they sent formal retraction demands prior to filing the lawsuit, but none of the defendants have publicly corrected or clarified their statements.
Marko highlighted the gravity of falsely attributing racial slurs to someone: “The N-word is the most offensive and inflammatory racial slur in the English language. No other word expresses so much hatred and bigotry. Falsely accusing someone of using that word hurts not only the person falsely accused, but hurts every true victim of racial hatred and bigotry.”
The case underscores the increasing tension between athletes and fans at sporting events, as well as the potentially devastating consequences when accusations spread through traditional and social media without verification. It also raises important questions about the responsibility of media organizations and public figures when reporting on or discussing sensitive incidents involving alleged racial provocations.
When contacted for comment, Metcalf’s attorney and Shay Shay Media LLC, which produces the “Nightcap” podcast, did not respond to inquiries. Ford Field Management issued a brief statement, saying, “The organization does not comment on ongoing legal matters.”
The lawsuit is expected to draw significant attention from both sports and legal communities as it progresses through the court system, potentially setting precedents for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
