During a contentious House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday, Republican Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio confronted Minnesota Governor Tim Walz over what he characterized as a misleading claim regarding the resumption of payments to Feeding Our Future (FOF), a nonprofit organization later embroiled in a massive fraud scandal.
The exchange centered on Walz’s previous assertion that a court order had compelled Minnesota to restart payments to FOF in 2021 after the state had suspended them due to fraud concerns. Jordan directly challenged this narrative, citing a September 2022 court press release that explicitly contradicted the governor’s claim.
“Why didn’t you tell the truth about why you restarted the payments?” Jordan asked during the hearing.
Walz initially deflected, discussing how FOF had expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. When pressed further by Jordan, the governor stated, “My understanding was the agency believed that the court had required them to make those payments.”
Jordan then referenced the court’s official response to Walz’s claim, reading from the September 23, 2022 press release: “Governor Tim Walz told the media that the Minnesota Department of Education attempted to end payments to FOF because of possible fraud, but that Judge Guthmann ordered payments to continue in April 2021. That is false.”
The press release further clarified that Judge John Guthmann “never ordered the Department of Education to resume payments to FOF in April 2021, or at any other time,” directly contradicting the governor’s public statements.
When confronted with this discrepancy, Walz maintained that there had been a difference in interpretation among attorneys at the Department of Education. “Congressman, the attorneys at the Department of Education interpreted that differently,” Walz said, adding that the judges involved were “no longer on the bench.”
Jordan pressed the issue, stating, “Somebody’s lying… you can’t say the court ordered you to restart the payments, and then the court says, ‘We didn’t order you to restart the payments.’ So either you’re lying or the court’s lying… Which one is it?”
Walz responded by reiterating that there had been a “misinterpretation” by agency attorneys, prompting Jordan to accuse him of “trying to hide behind… some court order that didn’t exist.”
The confrontation highlights the ongoing fallout from one of the largest pandemic-related fraud cases in the United States. Federal prosecutors have indicted more than 70 individuals for allegedly defrauding over $300 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program through Feeding Our Future. The defendants allegedly used the nonprofit as a vehicle to claim reimbursements for meals that were never provided to children during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
The scandal has become a significant political liability for Walz, particularly as his national profile has risen following his selection as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election. Critics have questioned his administration’s oversight of federal funds and its response once concerns about potential fraud emerged.
The hearing underscores the intense scrutiny surrounding pandemic-era relief programs, many of which were rapidly expanded with limited oversight mechanisms in place. Government watchdogs have identified billions in potential fraud across various COVID-19 relief programs, raising questions about administrative safeguards and accountability measures during crisis response.
As the legal proceedings against the alleged FOF fraudsters continue, the political debate over who bears responsibility for enabling such extensive abuse of taxpayer funds shows no signs of abating.
