Olympic champions Jordan Stolz and Jutta Leerdam turned a false rumor into reality when they decided to train together at the Winter Games, creating an unexpected collaboration between two of speed skating’s brightest stars.

The unusual pairing began when Leerdam, a Dutch speed skating sensation, was asked about fabricated stories surrounding the 2026 Games. She revealed that while rumors of her training with American phenom Stolz were initially false, they ultimately inspired an actual training session.

“Me training with Jordan Stolz. That wasn’t even a thing,” Leerdam told reporters on Sunday. “And then we were like, ‘Oh. We should maybe do that.’ So then we trained together.”

What started as a casual conversation during a stationary bike workout evolved into an impromptu skating session. Leerdam described it as “just a few laps,” but noted the experience “ended up working pretty well.”

“He’s super good at skating. I understand his timing when you skate behind someone. It can always help,” Leerdam said of the collaboration with Stolz, highlighting the technical benefits of training alongside an elite athlete with different techniques.

The Netherlands’ Leerdam has been a dominant force at the Milan Games. She secured a silver medal in the women’s 500-meter event and claimed gold in the 1,000-meter race. Her fiancé, social media personality and boxer Jake Paul, was visibly emotional in the stands following her gold medal performance, adding a personal dimension to her Olympic journey.

In both competitions, Leerdam found herself in tight contests with fellow Dutch teammate Femke Kok. Kok edged Leerdam by 0.66 seconds to take gold in the 500-meter event. Despite settling for silver, this result marked significant progress for Leerdam, who finished fifth in the same event at the 2022 Olympics.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Stolz has emerged as America’s breakout star in Milan, delivering crucial victories amid otherwise underwhelming performances from Team USA. He has established himself as the skater to beat, outclassing Dutch competitor Jenning de Boo in both the 500-meter and 1,000-meter races to secure two gold medals.

Stolz’s first victory in the 1,000-meter event required a come-from-behind effort to edge out de Boo. In the 500-meter race, he maintained his advantage throughout, preventing the Dutchman from mounting a similar comeback. Both performances resulted in new Olympic records, showcasing Stolz’s exceptional talent and current dominance.

These gold medals represent two of the five total gold medals earned by American athletes at these Games, contributing significantly to Team USA’s fourth-place position in the overall medal standings.

Stolz still has opportunities to add to his medal count with two events remaining – the 1,500-meter and mass start competitions. If successful in both, he could join an elite group of just three other athletes who have won at least four gold medals in a single Winter Olympics.

“Going into the 1,500, I have a few days to relax before that. And right now, my speed and endurance feel really good,” Stolz said, expressing confidence about his upcoming events. “So if I skate a clean race, it should be a good result.”

The unexpected training partnership between these two champions represents a unique moment of cross-national collaboration at the highest levels of Olympic competition. While their brief session together was unplanned, it demonstrates how elite athletes can learn from each other despite representing different countries in fierce competition.

As both skaters continue their Olympic campaigns, the skills and insights gained from their impromptu training session might just provide the marginal gains that make the difference between silver and gold in the remaining events.
