Iranian missile strikes on Tel Aviv and subsequent Israeli retaliation have drawn global attention amid escalating Middle East tensions. Now, misinformation about the conflict is spreading across social media platforms, with a falsely captioned video compilation purporting to show widespread destruction in Tel Aviv.

Fact-checkers have confirmed that the viral compilation, which includes ten different video clips, does not show recent damage in Tel Aviv as claimed. Instead, the footage comes from entirely different events and locations, primarily from Gaza and Turkey.

Researchers traced at least seven of the ten clips to their original sources. The first video in the compilation, showing aerial drone footage of a completely destroyed street, was identified as footage from Antakya in Turkey’s Hatay province following the devastating February 2023 earthquake that killed more than 55,000 people across Turkey and Syria. The video had been horizontally flipped from its original orientation in an apparent attempt to disguise its origin.

The second video depicts scenes from Gaza, not Israel, and appears to be mirrored footage matching photographs of the aftermath of an Israeli airstrike on the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza from November 2023. Similarly, the fourth video shows buildings destroyed by Israeli strikes in Gaza City from October 2023.

The third video was also confirmed to show earthquake damage in Antakya, Turkey, from the same 2023 natural disaster that claimed tens of thousands of lives.

While fact-checkers couldn’t definitively geolocate all clips in the compilation, they identified the sixth clip as Gaza City footage and the eighth video as showing the remains of al-Farouk mosque in Rafah, Gaza. The tenth clip also depicts destruction in Gaza rather than Tel Aviv.

This pattern of misrepresentation exemplifies a troubling trend in how conflict-related content spreads online. While Tel Aviv has indeed experienced Iranian missile strikes in recent weeks, with some residential buildings damaged, the destruction shown in the viral compilation dramatically exaggerates the actual impact by using footage from entirely different events.

The misleading compilation has gained significant traction across major social media platforms including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok. Such digital misinformation can fuel misconceptions about the scale and nature of the conflict, potentially influencing public perception and discourse around the complex geopolitical situation.

Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of verifying sources before sharing dramatic footage during ongoing conflicts. They recommend checking whether content comes from trustworthy and verifiable sources, especially when videos claim to show current events in active conflict zones.

This incident highlights the ease with which old footage from unrelated events can be repurposed to create false narratives about current conflicts. Similar patterns of misinformation have been observed throughout the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, with footage from various conflicts, natural disasters, and even video games being misattributed to current events in the Middle East.

As tensions continue to escalate between Iran and Israel following missile exchanges, verifying information becomes increasingly critical for the public’s understanding of actual developments on the ground. Fact-checking organizations continue to monitor and debunk such misleading content as it emerges.
