Middle East Tensions Escalate as Israel and US Strike Iran, Triggering Wave of Misinformation

Fighting has erupted across the Middle East after Israel and the United States launched a massive joint military operation against Iran, following weeks of tensions and diplomatic negotiations. The strikes came after a significant US military build-up in the region.

In the aftermath, social media platforms have been flooded with false claims about attacks, many of which are artificially generated using AI technologies. These fabricated narratives, spreading in multiple languages, have complicated efforts to understand the true scope of the conflict.

DW Fact Check has investigated several viral claims circulating online, providing clarity on what’s real and what’s manufactured in the fog of war.

Minab School Attack: Authentic Footage Misrepresented

One widely circulated claim alleged that video showing destruction at a girls’ school in Minab, southern Iran, actually depicted a 2014 terrorist attack in Peshawar, Pakistan. This assertion is false.

The footage genuinely shows the aftermath of a strike on February 28, when a girls’ school in Minab was hit during the US-Israeli operation against Iran. Iranian officials have accused Israel and the United States of carrying out the attack, though Israel has reportedly denied responsibility for the school strike. These claims currently cannot be independently verified.

The United Nations has reported that approximately 150 people were killed in the incident, while Iranian state media placed the death toll at 165. Multiple credible news organizations and international bodies have confirmed the strike occurred, with verified video evidence documenting the destruction.

While a terrorist attack did occur at a school in Peshawar in 2014, footage from that incident bears no resemblance to the current situation in Iran. The confusion appears to have been amplified by Grok, the AI assistant on X (formerly Twitter), which incorrectly linked the Minab footage to the Pakistani attack.

AI-Generated Footage Falsely Shows Tel Aviv Missile Strike

Another viral video, viewed over one million times across multiple social platforms, purportedly showed a missile strike on a building in Tel Aviv. Despite authentic reports confirming that Iranian missiles did hit Tel Aviv during the conflict, this particular video is AI-generated.

Several telltale signs expose the fake: antennas on the building collapse before the missile makes contact, and a building on the left topples onto another structure that implausibly remains intact—a scenario that defies physical reality. This represents just one example among many AI-generated videos being shared in connection with the escalating conflict.

Fabricated Dubai Airport Attack

Similarly, claims that Dubai Airport was “ripped apart” by Iranian missiles, accompanied by dramatic footage of burning aircraft and terminals engulfed in smoke, have proven false. This 10-second clip exhibits multiple inconsistencies typical of AI generation: firefighters not aiming water at flames, an aircraft with anatomically impossible features, unnatural smoke patterns, and people standing inexplicably close to a burning aircraft.

In reality, Dubai Airport authorities confirmed only minor damage to a concourse in an incident that was quickly contained. While both Dubai International and Dubai World Central airports temporarily suspended operations following a partial airspace closure, they resumed limited service on March 2.

Verifying Content During Conflict

As social media becomes saturated with purported footage from conflict zones, distinguishing authentic content from fabrications grows increasingly challenging. Experts recommend closely examining videos for unnatural movements or physics-defying elements, using reverse image search tools like Google Lens to check if images have appeared previously in different contexts, and relying on trusted news organizations that verify information through multiple sources.

The proliferation of AI-generated content has added a new dimension to wartime misinformation, requiring heightened vigilance from audiences consuming news about the ongoing Middle East conflict. As military actions continue, the information battlefield remains equally contested, with fabricated narratives threatening to distort public understanding of real events.
