Argentina’s football icon Lionel Messi’s abruptly shortened appearance in Kolkata has spiraled into a multi-faceted controversy, with former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly now seeking ₹50 crore in damages from a football fan club official over allegations regarding his involvement in the ill-fated event.

The highly anticipated visit, which promised fans a chance to see the World Cup-winning captain in person, descended into chaos after Messi spent just 22 minutes at Salt Lake Stadium. Nearly 50,000 spectators who had paid premium prices for tickets—ranging from ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 officially, with some paying up to ₹20,000 through unofficial channels—were left deeply disappointed by the brevity of his appearance.

Initial excitement peaked when Messi entered the stadium alongside teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul to thunderous applause. However, the atmosphere rapidly deteriorated as a swarm of politicians, VIPs, security personnel, and handlers surrounded the football superstar, effectively creating a barrier between him and the fans who had come to see him.

Event promoter Satadru Dutta made repeated emotional appeals over the stadium’s public address system in an attempt to restore order, but these efforts proved futile. The situation deteriorated further when Messi departed prematurely, triggering an outburst of frustration among spectators.

What followed was approximately 90 minutes of disorder, with angry fans throwing bottles, damaging temporary structures, tearing out stadium seating, and vandalizing property. The incident has raised serious questions about event planning, security arrangements, and crowd management at high-profile sporting events in India.

The controversy took an unexpected turn when Uttam Saha, representing the ‘Argentina Football Fan Club,’ publicly claimed that Ganguly—not the arrested promoter Dutta—was the actual organizer of Messi’s tour to India. According to Saha, Dutta was merely acting as a front for the operation.

Ganguly responded swiftly and decisively to these allegations. In addition to filing a complaint with the Kolkata Police Cyber Cell, he served Saha with a ₹50 crore legal notice for defamation. The cricket legend has categorically denied any organizational role in the event, describing Saha’s statements as “baseless and defamatory” and harmful to his reputation built over decades as both a sportsperson and administrator.

The fallout has extended to government and law enforcement circles as well. The West Bengal state government has issued show-cause notices to several senior police officials, including the Director General of Police and the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner. A deputy commissioner has been suspended for alleged negligence in handling the event. Officials from the Youth Affairs and Sports Department and Salt Lake Stadium administration have also faced disciplinary action.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Ganguly was originally scheduled to participate in a ceremony honoring Messi alongside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This ceremonial element was canceled in the wake of the unrest.

What was intended to be a landmark celebration of international football in Kolkata—a city known for its passionate sports culture—has instead become a cautionary tale about the consequences of inadequate planning for high-profile sporting events. The episode highlights the challenges of organizing appearances by global sports celebrities in venues where security protocols and crowd management systems may not be fully prepared for the intensity of fan enthusiasm.

As investigations continue and legal proceedings unfold, the Messi visit will likely prompt a reevaluation of how international sporting events are organized and managed in India, particularly in facilities where infrastructure and security arrangements may require significant enhancement to meet international standards.
