Donald Trump has launched a renewed campaign to challenge the 2020 election results, this time using federal resources to advance his longstanding claims of widespread fraud, despite these allegations having been repeatedly disproven.

The FBI executed a search warrant Wednesday at Fulton County’s election headquarters in Georgia, seeking ballots from the 2020 presidential election. The raid follows Trump’s recent comments at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he hinted that charges related to the 2020 election were forthcoming.

“The man has obsessions, as do a fair number of people, but he’s the only one who has the full power of the United States behind him,” said Rick Hasen, a UCLA law professor, highlighting concerns about the president’s use of federal agencies to pursue personal vendettas.

Critics view the Georgia search as part of a broader pattern of Trump using federal resources to settle personal scores. Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia drew parallels to the controversial immigration crackdown in Minnesota that resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens who were protesting. “From Minnesota to Georgia, on display to the whole world, is a President spiraling out of control, wielding federal law enforcement as an unaccountable instrument of personal power and revenge,” Ossoff stated.

The timing has raised additional concerns among election officials preparing for the 2026 midterm elections, where Trump’s party faces challenges maintaining congressional control. Some observers worry that these actions could foreshadow more aggressive intervention in future elections.

“Georgia’s a blueprint,” warned Kristin Nabers of All Voting Is Local. “If they can get away with taking election materials here, what’s to stop them from taking election materials or machines from some other state after they lose?”

Georgia has been central to Trump’s election fraud narrative since his infamous January 2, 2021, phone call to Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, during which he asked Raffensperger to “find” 11,780 votes to swing the state in his favor. Raffensperger refused, citing multiple reviews that confirmed Biden’s narrow victory in Georgia.

Similar recounts and reviews in battleground states including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada—many led by Republican officials—affirmed Biden’s victory. Trump’s legal challenges to the election results were rejected by dozens of courts, and his own Attorney General acknowledged there was no evidence of widespread fraud.

The consequences for those who amplified Trump’s election fraud claims have been significant. Rudy Giuliani settled a defamation lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers for $148 million. Voting machine companies have also successfully pursued legal action against media outlets that broadcast unsubstantiated fraud allegations, including Fox News, which agreed to pay $787 million in one such settlement.

Trump’s first day back in office included pardoning or commuting sentences for approximately 1,500 people charged in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He has also attempted to establish new rules for state election systems through executive orders, though these efforts have been blocked by courts citing constitutional limitations on presidential power over elections.

The president’s retribution campaign extends beyond election officials. He has expressed interest in pursuing criminal charges against lawmakers who investigated the January 6 attack and has targeted former cybersecurity officials who publicly affirmed the 2020 election’s security.

Despite the pressing demands of global conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine and domestic legislative priorities, Trump has consistently returned to the 2020 election, repeatedly characterizing it as “rigged” and “the most corrupt election ever”—claims that have been thoroughly debunked.

David Becker, former Department of Justice voting rights attorney and executive director of The Center for Election Innovation & Research, expressed skepticism about the potential for successful prosecutions resulting from the FBI’s Georgia search. “So much this administration has done is to make claims in social media rather than go to court,” Becker noted. “I suspect this is more about poisoning the well for 2026.”
