Farooq Abdullah Criticizes LG Sinha for Misleading Statements on Statehood and Governance

The growing tension between Jammu and Kashmir’s elected government and the Lieutenant Governor’s administration escalated Sunday as National Conference President Farooq Abdullah sharply rebuked claims that the region’s current governance structure is sufficient to meet public needs.

In comments made to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah directly challenged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s recent assertion that the lack of full statehood should not impede effective governance in the region.

“He has never spoken the truth,” Abdullah said of Sinha. “He holds total control over the Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Not a single file has been passed back under his authority.”

The confrontation highlights the ongoing political friction in the region, where the administration remains under the direct control of New Delhi following the controversial 2019 constitutional changes that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and statehood.

Lieutenant Governor Sinha had earlier dismissed concerns about the region’s downgraded status during an event in Srinagar, suggesting that complaints about the lack of statehood were merely excuses for “underperformance.” He claimed there had been “unnecessary speculation” about statehood restoration despite what he characterized as clear messaging from the central government.

Sinha also asserted that the current administration led by Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah’s son and the region’s Chief Minister, possesses adequate powers to address developmental needs and public welfare issues – a claim the senior Abdullah forcefully rejected.

The disagreement underscores the complex power dynamics that have emerged since August 2019, when the Indian government abrogated Article 370 of the constitution and bifurcated the former state into two Union Territories – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. This move fundamentally altered the governance structure, placing significant executive authority in the hands of the centrally-appointed Lieutenant Governor.

Political analysts note that this arrangement creates an unusual dual power structure, with an elected government that has limited autonomy operating alongside a Lieutenant Governor who retains control over crucial administrative functions, including security matters and senior bureaucratic appointments.
