Punjab police have debunked false gangster claims of bombing a station in what officials describe as an alarming trend of misinformation spreading across social media platforms in the region.
The incident began when three gangsters apparently mistook news of an actual bombing at a police station in Naugaon, Kashmir, for an opportunity to falsely claim responsibility for a non-existent attack at the Talwara police station in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district.
According to senior police officials, the gangsters issued a threatening letter claiming they had bombed the Talwara station and promised to escalate their attacks. The letter warned that future strikes would employ AK-47s and rocket launchers rather than pistols and would target individuals allegedly designated by Pakistan-based terrorist Harvinder Rinda.
“This is a clear case of misinformation being weaponized to create panic among the public,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Malik, who immediately convened an emergency meeting with his leadership team upon learning of the viral claims.
The hoax prompted rapid mobilization of security forces. Police dispatched an anti-sabotage bomb squad to conduct a thorough sweep of the Talwara station, examining every room, rooftop, water tank, and surrounding courtyard. After an exhaustive search, authorities confirmed no explosion had occurred at the facility.
DSP Balwinder Singh Jodha, who participated in the investigation, explained that a local web channel had erroneously connected the Kashmir bombing incident to Punjab, likely contributing to the confusion that enabled the gangsters to fabricate their claim.
“We believe the perpetrators are operating from outside Punjab, possibly even outside the country,” Jodha said. “The cyber cell is now working to trace the origin of these posts and identify those responsible.”
The false threat was attributed to three known gangsters—Manu Agwan, Maninder Billa, and Gopi Nawanshaharia—all believed to be associates of Harvinder Rinda, a terrorist allegedly operating from Pakistan. Security agencies have previously linked Rinda to several criminal and terrorist activities across Punjab and neighboring states.
The incident highlights the growing challenge of social media misinformation in sensitive border states like Punjab. In recent years, security experts have noted an increasing trend of criminal organizations and terror groups attempting to amplify their influence through false claims on digital platforms.
In response to the threat, authorities have significantly strengthened security measures at the Talwara police station. Green mesh fencing has been installed to increase the height of the station’s outer walls, preventing surveillance or the tossing of objects onto the premises. Officials have established round-the-clock checkpoints in surrounding areas and enhanced CCTV coverage.
“We’re taking no chances, even though we’ve confirmed this particular threat was fabricated,” said an officer involved in implementing the new security protocols. “These measures will remain in place for the foreseeable future.”
SSP Malik has directed all police stations throughout the district to maintain heightened vigilance. Additionally, investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from major roads connecting to Talwara, including routes to Hajipur, Daulatpur, Sansarpur Terrace, and Shah Canal Headworks.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of ongoing security concerns in Punjab, where authorities have long contended with cross-border terrorism issues and criminal gang activities. Law enforcement officials stress that despite the false nature of this particular claim, the public should remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
“While we want to reassure the public that this specific threat was a hoax, we continue to take all security matters with the utmost seriousness,” SSP Malik said. “The Punjab Police remains fully prepared to respond to any legitimate security concerns.”
