The Department of Justice has dismissed allegations against former President Donald Trump contained in the latest release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, calling the claims “untrue.”

The statement came after a new batch of previously sealed court files from a lawsuit connected to Epstein was made public this week. These documents are part of a broader collection being released following a December court order that mandated the unsealing of materials from a 2015 defamation case filed by Virginia Giuffre against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former associate.

Justice Department officials took the unusual step of addressing specific allegations found in the documents, emphasizing that certain statements regarding Trump’s purported involvement with Epstein’s activities were fabricated. The department rarely comments on such matters, particularly those involving ongoing investigations or high-profile figures.

“After thorough examination, we have determined that several claims involving former President Trump in these documents are demonstrably false,” said a senior Justice Department official who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the case. “We believe it’s important to set the record straight on this matter given the significant public interest.”

The Epstein case has maintained a high profile since the financier’s 2019 death in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide, though questions and conspiracy theories have persisted.

Maxwell, Epstein’s former girlfriend and alleged accomplice, was convicted in 2021 on five charges related to recruiting and grooming teenage girls for sexual encounters with Epstein between 1994 and 2004. She is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.

The document release has generated renewed interest in Epstein’s connections to prominent figures across business, politics, and entertainment. Epstein cultivated relationships with numerous high-profile individuals, including Trump, former President Bill Clinton, Britain’s Prince Andrew, and various business leaders and celebrities.

Legal experts note that the appearance of names in these documents doesn’t necessarily indicate wrongdoing. Many individuals mentioned had social or business relationships with Epstein but no involvement in illegal activities.

“The documents contain a mix of allegations, testimony, and correspondence,” explained Rebecca Roiphe, a former prosecutor and professor at New York Law School. “Being named doesn’t equate to culpability. Some people are mentioned simply because they attended the same events or had business dealings with Epstein.”

Trump’s relationship with Epstein dates back to the 1980s and 1990s when both men were fixtures in Palm Beach and New York social circles. Trump famously remarked in a 2002 New York Magazine interview that Epstein was a “terrific guy” who enjoyed the company of beautiful women, “many of them on the younger side.” However, Trump has maintained that he severed ties with Epstein long before his legal troubles became public.

The Justice Department’s unusual intervention in clarifying the record regarding Trump comes amid heightened political tensions, with the former president currently campaigning for the 2024 Republican nomination.

Media coverage of the Epstein files has been intense, reflecting both legitimate public interest and the sensational nature of the allegations. Several news organizations had petitioned the court for the release of these documents, arguing for transparency in a case of significant public concern.

Giuffre, who sued Maxwell for defamation after Maxwell called her a liar for alleging Epstein and Maxwell sexually abused her, has been a central figure in bringing Epstein’s activities to light. She has also accused other prominent figures of misconduct, including Prince Andrew, who settled a lawsuit with her in 2022 without admitting wrongdoing.

Legal proceedings related to Epstein’s estate and victims’ compensation continue. His estate, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, established a victims’ compensation fund that has paid out more than $121 million to approximately 150 individuals.

As more documents become public, investigators continue to examine the full scope of Epstein’s operations and network, which allegedly involved the trafficking of underage girls to his properties in New York, Florida, and the Caribbean.
