CNN’s fact-checker Daniel Dale delivered a comprehensive breakdown of numerous false claims made by President Donald Trump during his recent White House address to the nation, highlighting significant discrepancies between the president’s statements and economic reality.

Speaking on CNN’s “News Central” with host Kate Bolduan, Dale didn’t mince words: “I saw a whole bunch of false claims.” The fact-checker methodically dismantled several key assertions from the president’s speech, particularly focusing on economic claims that could mislead the American public.

When addressing Trump’s statement that inflation “was the worst in 48 years” when he took office in January, Dale clarified that this was inaccurate. “The 3% inflation rate Trump inherited was the exact same rate” as was recorded in September of this year, Dale explained. While inflation did reach a 40-year high under President Joe Biden in June 2022, Dale noted this wasn’t an all-time record as Trump had suggested.

Trump’s claim that “inflation is stopped” also failed to withstand scrutiny. “The latest inflation rate we have for September was 3.0%. That was the fifth consecutive month that the year-over-year inflation rate had increased,” Dale said. Though the November inflation rate did later decrease to 2.7% on the day of the interview, Dale pointed out this doesn’t mean prices have stopped rising altogether—only that they’re rising at a slower pace.

Perhaps most striking was Dale’s rebuttal of Trump’s statement about grocery prices. While the president correctly noted that egg prices are falling, his sweeping claim that “everything else is falling rapidly” contradicted market data. Dale cited specific counter-examples: coffee prices have increased 15% since January, ground beef is up around 14%, and banana prices have risen approximately 8%.

“I could go on and on. Literally, dozens of items. Not true,” Dale emphasized.

The fact-checker also addressed Trump’s assertion about drug price reductions of up to 600%, calling such figures “mathematically impossible.” Dale explained, “If you have a decrease of more than 100%, that means that Americans would be getting paid to acquire their medications. Obviously, that is not happening.”

During a separate appearance on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” Dale tackled additional claims from the president’s address, including Trump’s statement that he “settled eight wars” this year. “President Trump has not settled eight wars,” Dale said firmly. “That list includes various wars, various situations that were not even wars and some conflicts that have not actually been resolved.”

These fact-checks come at a critical time as economic indicators and policy achievements remain central talking points in political discourse. Dale’s thorough analysis serves as an important reminder of the need for accurate information about inflation, consumer prices, and other economic metrics that directly impact American households.

The CNN fact-checker indicated that his complete analysis would be available online for those seeking further details about the president’s statements and the factual context surrounding them.
