Renowned cellist Hong Jeong-gi has filed a formal complaint against popular online content creator Kang Jin-goo, accusing him of defamation and coercion, according to legal representatives involved in the case.

The complaint, submitted to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on Monday, marks an escalation in the dispute between the classical musician and the controversial internet personality known for his outspoken political commentary.

Hong’s legal team alleges that Kang made numerous false claims about the cellist across multiple online platforms, damaging his reputation and causing significant emotional distress. The complaint specifically cites several instances where Kang allegedly spread misinformation about Hong’s professional conduct and personal life without factual basis.

The cellist, who has built an international reputation over decades of performances with prestigious orchestras throughout Asia and Europe, claims the accusations have already impacted his professional opportunities and standing in the classical music community.

“These unfounded allegations have real consequences for artists whose careers depend on their reputation,” said a spokesperson for Hong’s legal team, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing legal proceedings. “Our client has endured months of harassment that has extended beyond mere criticism into the realm of malicious falsehood.”

The complaint also includes allegations of coercion, with Hong claiming Kang attempted to pressure him into making public statements that aligned with Kang’s political viewpoints. According to the filing, these attempts included implied threats that refusal would lead to further public attacks on Hong’s character.

Kang Jin-goo, who has amassed a substantial following on various social media platforms for his political commentary, has frequently targeted public figures who he perceives as opposing his ideological stance. His controversial approach has previously landed him in legal trouble, with several ongoing cases related to similar accusations.

The dispute highlights the growing tension between traditional public figures and new-media influencers in South Korea, where the line between commentary and harassment has become increasingly blurred in recent years.

South Korea’s defamation laws differ significantly from those in many Western countries, as they allow for criminal prosecution even when the allegedly defamatory statements might be factually accurate but deemed damaging to reputation. Critics of these laws argue they can stifle legitimate criticism, while supporters maintain they provide necessary protection against character assassination.

The classical music industry in South Korea has largely stayed removed from political controversies until recently. However, as social media continues to blur the boundaries between entertainment, culture, and politics, more artists find themselves unwillingly drawn into public disputes.

“This case represents a concerning trend where artists and performers are being targeted for their perceived political positions rather than their artistic contributions,” noted Kim Min-seo, a cultural analyst who specializes in the intersection of arts and digital media. “The pressure to take political stances can be particularly damaging in fields like classical music, where the focus has traditionally remained on artistic expression rather than political discourse.”

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office is expected to review the complaint and decide whether to pursue formal charges against Kang. If convicted of defamation under Korean law, penalties can include substantial fines and potential imprisonment depending on the severity and intent behind the false statements.

Hong, who has maintained a relatively low public profile despite his musical achievements, issued a brief statement through his representatives expressing regret that legal action became necessary but emphasizing his determination to defend his reputation.

“I have devoted my life to music and have always sought to maintain the highest professional and personal standards,” Hong stated. “While I respect differing opinions and fair criticism, I cannot allow deliberate falsehoods to go unchallenged.”

Representatives for Kang Jin-goo did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations.
