A former member of the Knights of Columbus has filed a lawsuit against the Diocese of Charleston and a local priest, alleging his reputation was damaged by false accusations of financial impropriety that led to his removal from the Catholic fraternal organization.

The suit, filed this week in Charleston County Court, names both the diocese and Father Gregory Wilson as defendants. According to court documents, the plaintiff served as a financial secretary for his local Knights of Columbus council for several years before the dispute arose.

The legal complaint centers on allegations that Father Wilson, who serves as the council’s chaplain, publicly accused the plaintiff of misappropriating funds during a council meeting attended by dozens of members. The plaintiff claims these statements were made without any evidence or prior investigation.

“Father Wilson stood before the entire membership and claimed there were ‘financial irregularities’ that required immediate action,” said attorney James Harrington, who represents the plaintiff. “Our client was removed from his position that very night, despite having maintained impeccable financial records throughout his tenure.”

The Knights of Columbus, founded in 1882, is one of the largest Catholic fraternal service organizations in the world, with nearly two million members globally. Local councils operate with significant autonomy but maintain connections to both their parish priests and the broader diocese.

Financial secretaries within the Knights handle significant responsibilities, including collecting membership dues, maintaining accounting records, and processing charitable contributions. The position is considered one of trust and standing within the organization.

According to the lawsuit, an independent audit conducted after the plaintiff’s removal found no evidence of financial misconduct. Despite these findings, the plaintiff claims he was never reinstated or given a public apology, leaving his reputation permanently damaged within the tight-knit Catholic community.

“This isn’t just about clearing his name within the Knights,” Harrington explained. “In a community where church connections impact business relationships, social circles, and family life, these kinds of accusations have far-reaching consequences.”

The Diocese of Charleston, which oversees Catholic parishes across the entire state of South Carolina, has declined to comment specifically on the lawsuit, citing its policy not to discuss ongoing litigation. However, a spokesperson issued a brief statement confirming they are reviewing the complaint with their legal team.

“The Diocese takes all matters involving our clergy and parishioners seriously, and we are committed to a thorough and fair review of the facts in this case,” the statement read.

Legal experts note that cases involving religious organizations often involve complex questions about the separation of church and state. However, defamation claims can sometimes proceed when they involve statements that go beyond purely ecclesiastical matters.

“Courts are generally reluctant to interfere with internal church governance,” explained Rebecca Johnson, a law professor at Charleston School of Law who specializes in First Amendment issues but is not involved in this case. “But when allegations move into the realm of damaging someone’s reputation with potentially false claims, the legal system may find grounds to intervene.”

The plaintiff is seeking undisclosed damages for defamation, emotional distress, and interference with business relationships. The lawsuit also requests a formal retraction of the allegations and reinstatement to his former position within the Knights.

The case has drawn attention from other Knights of Columbus councils across the state, with some members expressing concern about proper procedures for handling financial oversight within their own organizations.

A scheduling conference is expected in the coming weeks, with both parties likely to begin the discovery process shortly thereafter. The court has not yet indicated when it might hear initial motions in the case.

The lawsuit comes at a sensitive time for the Diocese of Charleston, which has been working to strengthen transparency protocols following broader concerns about accountability within the Catholic Church nationwide.
