BRS Challenges CM Revanth Reddy’s Debt Repayment Claims, Citing Government’s Own Data

Fresh figures from the Telangana government’s Socio-Economic Outlook-2026 have contradicted Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s recent statements in the Assembly regarding the state’s debt and repayment figures, igniting a political controversy with the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

The dispute centers on Reddy’s claim that his administration had raised Rs 3.47 lakh crore in loans while repaying nearly Rs 3.3 lakh crore toward debt servicing. According to BRS leaders, these figures are significantly inflated compared to the government’s own published data.

During a debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address, Reddy asserted that his government’s substantial borrowing was unavoidable due to an alleged Rs 8 lakh crore debt burden inherited from the previous BRS government led by K Chandrashekhar Rao. This justification has become a focal point in the ongoing political battle between the ruling Congress and opposition BRS.

However, the Socio-Economic Outlook 2026, an official document tabled in the Assembly, presents contradictory information. It states that the Congress government spent approximately Rs 1.67 lakh crore toward principal and interest repayments between December 2023 and December 2025—less than half the amount claimed by the Chief Minister.

The document clarifies that these repayments covered both Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) loans and government-guaranteed loans raised by Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) but serviced by the government.

BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan addressed the discrepancy during a press conference at Telangana Bhavan on Sunday. “The Socio-Economic Outlook published by the State government itself proves that the Chief Minister misled the Assembly by presenting grossly inflated numbers,” Sravan said.

Sravan further challenged the Chief Minister’s attribution of the entire Rs 8 lakh crore outstanding debt as of December 31, 2025, to the previous BRS government. He accused Reddy of manipulating figures to “defame former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao” while hiding his own administration’s borrowing activities.

“The Chief Minister is stooping to new lows and taking credit for loans repaid by the SPVs and corporations to justify this government’s borrowing spree,” Sravan added, calling it “shameful” that the Chief Minister would mislead both the legislative body and the citizens of Telangana.

This controversy highlights the ongoing tension between the Congress government, which came to power in late 2023, and the BRS, which previously governed Telangana since its formation in 2014. Financial management and debt accumulation have emerged as critical battlegrounds in state politics.

The dispute also raises questions about fiscal transparency in Telangana, as the discrepancy between officially published data and statements made in the Assembly becomes increasingly apparent. Financial experts have noted that accurate debt reporting is essential for proper fiscal planning and economic stability in the state.

As the political debate intensifies, citizens and analysts alike are calling for greater clarity on Telangana’s actual financial position, especially as the state continues to pursue ambitious development projects amid concerns about mounting debt.

The Congress government has yet to formally respond to the specific allegations regarding the discrepancy between the Chief Minister’s statements and the data published in the Socio-Economic Outlook document.
