New Jersey state authorities have charged a Bloomsbury couple with falsely accusing state troopers of sexual assault during what investigators describe as a routine traffic stop turned hostile confrontation.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced that Justin Schubel, 35, and his wife Christy Schubel, 32, now face multiple charges including making false reports to law enforcement and obstruction of justice. The case stems from a January incident that escalated beyond a standard traffic violation.

According to court documents, Justin Schubel was initially stopped on Route 173 in Greenwich Township for allegedly driving with an expired registration. What might have resulted in a simple ticket instead spiraled into a contentious encounter when Schubel reportedly refused to provide his driver’s license and vehicle documentation.

State police officials say Schubel grew increasingly uncooperative, repeatedly asking troopers if he was being detained while refusing to comply with their instructions. After several warnings, officers removed him from the vehicle, placed him under arrest, and charged him with obstruction of justice.

The situation took a more serious turn days later when the couple filed formal complaints with the Office of Professional Standards within the New Jersey State Police. Their allegations were explosive: Justin Schubel claimed that troopers had punched him in the face and sexually assaulted him during the arrest. Meanwhile, Christy Schubel alleged that officers had sexually assaulted her as well.

State investigators launched a thorough probe into these serious accusations, reviewing body camera footage, dash cam recordings, and interviewing multiple witnesses. According to the Attorney General’s Office, the evidence told a dramatically different story than the one presented by the Schubels.

“False allegations against law enforcement not only waste valuable public resources but can significantly damage the reputation and career of the accused officers,” said a spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office. “We take all allegations of misconduct seriously, but equally seriously pursue charges when evidence shows such claims were fabricated.”

The investigation revealed no evidence supporting the couple’s claims of assault. Furthermore, authorities allege the body camera footage directly contradicted specific details provided in their complaints. This discrepancy led prosecutors to file charges against the couple for making false reports.

Legal experts note that false reporting cases involving police are particularly complex. While it’s essential to thoroughly investigate all claims of police misconduct, falsely accusing officers can undermine legitimate complaints and erode public trust in accountability systems.

“These situations create a difficult balance,” said criminal justice professor Maria Reynolds from Rutgers University, who was not involved in the case. “The public needs accessible ways to report potential police misconduct, but there must also be consequences for demonstrably false accusations that can damage careers and divert resources from legitimate investigations.”

The charges come at a time of heightened scrutiny around policing practices nationwide. New Jersey, like many states, has implemented reforms in recent years including mandatory body cameras for state troopers – technology that proved crucial in this investigation.

The Schubels now face third-degree charges which could potentially result in 3-5 years in prison and fines up to $15,000 if convicted. The couple has been released pending their first court appearance.

The New Jersey State Troopers Fraternal Association declined to comment specifically on the ongoing case but issued a statement supporting the thorough investigation process and emphasizing the importance of body camera technology in protecting both the public and officers from false claims.

Meanwhile, police accountability advocates caution that this case should not discourage legitimate complaints about police misconduct. “It’s critical that people understand the difference between filing a good-faith complaint about perceived misconduct versus knowingly making false statements,” said community activist Thomas Williams of the New Jersey Police Reform Coalition.

The case will now proceed through the court system, with preliminary hearings expected in the coming weeks. Neither the Schubels nor their attorney have issued public statements regarding the charges.
