Nigerian human rights lawyer Marshal Abubakar has threatened legal action against businesswoman Tracy Ohiri following allegations he claims are false and damaging to his professional reputation.
Ohiri, who recently made headlines for accusing Works Minister Dave Umahi of sexual harassment and failing to pay campaign-related debts, has now directed similar accusations toward Abubakar. In a recently released video statement, she alleged the lawyer coerced her into retracting her original claims against Minister Umahi, promising financial compensation that she says never materialized.
According to Ohiri’s account, Abubakar pressured her to record a retraction video after allegedly assuring her that the minister had agreed to financial compensation. She claims this promised payment never came through after she complied with the request.
Abubakar has forcefully denied these allegations, describing them as “false and misleading” in a detailed statement addressing the situation. The lawyer maintains that all his actions throughout his professional engagement with Ohiri were conducted lawfully and in good faith.
“At no point did I engage in any form of coercion or make false promises regarding compensation,” Abubakar stated. “My involvement was strictly professional and aimed at resolving a complex situation through proper legal channels.”
The lawyer explained that he played an instrumental role in mobilizing support for Ohiri when her freedom was potentially at risk. His efforts included enlisting prominent public figures such as Senator Ireti Kingibe and well-known activist Omoyele Sowore, along with other concerned citizens, to ensure Ohiri wasn’t unlawfully detained and that her right to free speech remained protected.
These interventions, according to Abubakar, ultimately resulted in Ohiri being granted bail, preventing what could have been an extended incarceration. However, the subsequent mediation process revealed significant inconsistencies in Ohiri’s claims against Minister Umahi.
“Despite multiple opportunities provided during the mediation process, Ms. Ohiri was unable to provide verifiable evidence supporting her allegations of a contractual relationship or any service delivery involving the minister,” Abubakar stated. The lawyer noted that no documentation or other proof was presented to substantiate the accusations that had been made public.
In what Abubakar describes as an effort to achieve an amicable resolution, a settlement was eventually facilitated wherein Ohiri received $70,000. The lawyer emphasized this payment was extended as “a goodwill gesture” rather than compensation or admission of liability by any involved parties. He added that this arrangement could be independently verified by third parties.
Abubakar specifically addressed allegations regarding his own financial interest in the matter, categorically denying that he received any personal benefit from the resolution process or the payment made to Ohiri.
The dispute highlights the increasingly complex intersection of public allegations, social media, and legal processes in Nigeria’s political landscape. Such cases have become more common as digital platforms provide avenues for accusations that previously might not have reached public attention.
Legal experts note that cases involving public officials frequently attract heightened scrutiny, particularly when allegations involve potential abuse of power or financial impropriety. The situation also underscores the challenges legal representatives face when navigating highly publicized disputes.
Abubakar concluded his statement with a warning that he intends to pursue appropriate legal remedies to protect his professional reputation and personal integrity from what he characterizes as false allegations. As of press time, no formal legal proceedings have been initiated, though the lawyer has indicated such action is forthcoming.
Neither Minister Umahi nor representatives from the Ministry of Works have issued any public comments regarding these latest developments in the ongoing controversy.
