A Kansas woman has been sentenced to federal prison for falsely claiming that her estranged spouse, NASA astronaut Anne McClain, illegally accessed her bank account while on the International Space Station.

Summer Heather Worden, 51, will serve three months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to making false statements to law enforcement. A federal court also ordered Worden to pay $210,000 in restitution.

The case, which garnered international attention in 2019, marked what many observers called the first alleged “space crime” investigation. However, federal investigators ultimately determined that Worden’s accusations were fabricated.

According to court documents, Worden claimed in July 2019 that McClain had improperly accessed her bank account while deployed to the International Space Station. The allegation sparked an unusual investigation that spanned from Earth to orbit, putting NASA and McClain under unwanted scrutiny.

Evidence presented during sentencing revealed that Worden had actually provided McClain with access to her financial records, including login credentials, as early as 2015. Investigators found that both parties had regularly accessed the account in question until January 2019, when Worden changed the account credentials during their separation proceedings.

“This case demonstrates the serious consequences of making false accusations to law enforcement,” U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei said in a statement following the sentencing.

The investigation further revealed that despite an internal probe that cleared McClain of any wrongdoing, Worden continued to promote her false claims through various news outlets. Court records show she hired a media consultant specifically to amplify these allegations and publicly released McClain’s personal information.

The case represents a rare instance where false accusations against a serving astronaut led to criminal charges against the accuser. Space law experts note that while there are established protocols for handling potential crimes in space, this case was unusual because the alleged crime didn’t actually occur.

McClain, a decorated Army aviator who joined NASA in 2013, was part of Expedition 58/59 to the International Space Station, launching in December 2018 and returning to Earth in June 2019. The false accusations came shortly after her return.

The incident briefly raised complex questions about jurisdiction in space and how law enforcement might handle potential crimes committed aboard the ISS. Under current agreements, astronauts are generally subject to the laws of their home countries while in orbit.

NASA maintained support for McClain throughout the investigation. The agency has strict protocols regarding astronaut conduct both on Earth and in space, with astronauts held to exceptionally high standards given their high-profile roles as representatives of the U.S. space program.

For McClain, the false allegations created a significant personal and professional challenge during an otherwise distinguished career. She has conducted two spacewalks and logged 204 days in space. Before becoming an astronaut, she served as a helicopter pilot in Iraq and is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The case highlights the damaging impact false accusations can have, particularly when they involve public figures. Legal experts note that while criminal charges for false reporting are relatively uncommon, this case was pursued in part because of the resources expended in the investigation and the public nature of the accusations.

With the legal proceedings now concluded, NASA continues to focus on its ambitious plans for future space exploration, including the Artemis program aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface and eventually sending astronauts to Mars.
