As generative AI tools increasingly adopt real-time web searching capabilities, they have become significantly more prone to spreading misinformation, according to a troubling new analysis of industry performance. In a striking reversal of promised improvements, the leading AI systems now repeat false information about current events at nearly twice the rate they did a year ago.

Data collected in August 2025 reveals that the top 10 AI tools repeated verifiably false claims in response to news-related queries 35 percent of the time—a substantial jump from the 18 percent error rate recorded in August 2024. This deterioration comes despite a year of technical advancements and public commitments from AI developers to create safer, more reliable systems.

The analysis points to a clear tradeoff between responsiveness and accuracy. A year ago, these AI systems would frequently decline to answer potentially problematic questions, citing data cutoffs or refusing to engage with sensitive topics. The non-response rate stood at 31 percent in August 2024. By last month, that caution had completely disappeared, with AI systems attempting to answer every query posed to them.

This newfound willingness to tackle all questions has come at a significant cost to reliability. Rather than acknowledging limitations, AI chatbots now routinely pull information from what researchers describe as a “polluted online information ecosystem,” often treating questionable sources with the same credibility as established news outlets.

The problem stems partly from how these systems access information. To provide timely responses about current events, AI tools now search the web in real-time, but they struggle to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources. This vulnerability creates an opportunity for manipulation that hasn’t gone unexploited.

Intelligence experts have identified coordinated efforts by foreign actors—particularly Russian disinformation operations—to deliberately seed false narratives into online spaces where AI tools search for information. By creating networks of low-engagement websites, social media posts, and AI-generated content farms, these operations can effectively launder propaganda through supposedly neutral AI systems.

“What we’re seeing is essentially a backdoor into the information ecosystem,” explains Dr. Elaine Marcus, a digital misinformation researcher at Cornell University. “These malign actors understand the crawling and indexing patterns of AI systems better than most users do, and they’re exploiting those patterns systematically.”

The deterioration in factual reliability spans across all major AI platforms, regardless of their parent companies’ size or resources. Even systems marketed specifically for their improved factual grounding showed significant increases in error rates.

Industry responses have been mixed. Several leading AI companies have acknowledged the issue but emphasized the technical challenges of real-time fact-checking in an increasingly complex information landscape. Others have questioned the methodology behind the analysis, suggesting that the sample of queries may not represent typical usage patterns.

Consumer advocates and media literacy experts, however, argue that the findings reveal fundamental flaws in the industry’s approach to AI development. “There’s been an overemphasis on making these systems conversational and responsive at the expense of basic accuracy,” says Thomas Hernandez of the Digital Democracy Project. “The race to make AI feel more human has inadvertently made it more vulnerable to very human forms of manipulation.”

The implications extend beyond individual users seeking information. As businesses, educators, and government agencies increasingly integrate these AI tools into their operations, the propagation of false information could have far-reaching consequences.

Some lawmakers have cited the findings as evidence for the need for stronger AI regulation, particularly around transparency in how systems source and verify information. Senator Amanda Reeves called the results “deeply concerning” and suggested that “AI companies must be held to higher standards of factual reliability if these tools are going to play the public-facing roles their developers envision.”

The analysis raises fundamental questions about the future development of AI tools and whether the current approach of real-time web access can be reconciled with reliable information delivery in an era of sophisticated disinformation campaigns.
