In the era of digital warfare, fact-checking has emerged as a critical defense against the weaponization of information, particularly in conflict zones like Gaza. As false narratives spread at unprecedented speeds, media organizations are developing sophisticated systems to combat misinformation and preserve journalistic integrity.

The ongoing conflict in Palestine has highlighted how information manipulation serves as a cornerstone of modern military strategy. As the intensity of what many describe as a genocide in Gaza increases, fabricated news has proliferated, often aimed at justifying military operations or influencing international opinion regarding Israeli policies.

Israel’s media campaign extends beyond conventional misinformation tactics. It includes sophisticated manipulation of geographic data regarding missile strikes, repurposing unrelated imagery, and publishing misleading reports about events in Gaza—all part of a coordinated effort to shape its international image during the conflict.

“Fact-checking is not merely a technical task aimed at verifying the accuracy of information—it is an ethical practice that safeguards the credibility of journalism and the trust of the audience,” explains Hassan Khodary from Sanad, Al Jazeera’s fact-checking agency.

The Israeli military has leveraged artificial intelligence technologies to construct and disseminate narratives that serve its strategic objectives. These range from exaggerating military successes to fabricating accounts of events on the ground. Israeli institutions have deployed AI-powered content analysis tools to monitor social media conversations, analyze public opinion trends, and craft counter-narratives using language that resonates with specific target audiences.

Unit 8200, Israel’s specialized cyber intelligence division, reportedly manages large-scale data analysis platforms that monitor social media activities—providing insights that inform the country’s information warfare strategies.

In response to this sophisticated misinformation ecosystem, major media organizations like Al Jazeera have established dedicated fact-checking units. Sanad Agency represents one of the leading initiatives focused on combating fake news, particularly regarding events in the Middle East.

The agency operates as a centralized unit within Al Jazeera, providing a constant stream of verified news from open sources. Its output includes breaking news alerts, notifications about fabricated stories, and detailed analysis of social media accounts. The team also produces regular reports on detecting fake news and tools for identifying manipulated photos and videos.

Sanad’s work has proven vital during the Gaza conflict. In 2024 alone, the agency received 6,660 verification requests from different newsrooms within the Al Jazeera network and issued more than 760 alerts about widely circulated content that proved to be misleading after verification.

The team has actively challenged Israeli narratives regarding civilian casualties, publishing 22 open-source investigations that refuted claims made to legitimize attacks on Gaza’s civilian population. These investigations have exposed the truth behind incidents like the bombing of Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, the targeting of the World Central Kitchen humanitarian team, and the killing of Palestinian child Hind Rajab.

Perhaps the most insidious strategy in spreading misinformation involves context manipulation—presenting factually accurate content in misleading contexts. For example, Israeli journalist Edy Cohen posted a photo on social media in May 2024 claiming to show Israeli tanks advancing toward Rafah just days before the actual incursion. While the image itself was authentic, verification revealed it had been taken seven months earlier, in October 2023.

In conflict zones, where news is often emotionally charged and fast-paced, presenting information without full context can significantly distort public perception of events. This makes contextual verification as important as factual verification in maintaining journalistic integrity.

As information warfare techniques become increasingly sophisticated, the role of fact-checkers grows more crucial. On International Fact-Checking Day, media professionals are reminded of their responsibility to verify sources and information before publication, utilizing all available tools to ensure accuracy before content reaches the public.

In today’s complex information landscape, fact-checking has evolved beyond a journalistic practice—it has become an essential safeguard for truth in times of conflict and crisis.
