Kashmir police have launched a formal investigation into what they describe as a deliberate campaign of misinformation across multiple media platforms, officials announced Tuesday.

The Srinagar Police issued a statement expressing “serious cognisance” of false and fabricated information being circulated by certain news channels, media outlets, and individuals on both electronic and social media platforms throughout the region.

Authorities claim these activities represent a coordinated effort to destabilize the sensitive Kashmir Valley, which has experienced relative calm in recent years following decades of insurgency and unrest. The police statement specifically accused unnamed elements of “attempting to spread distorted narratives and unverified content” with the deliberate intention of inciting unrest, disturbing public order, and creating social disharmony.

In response to these alleged violations, law enforcement has registered a formal First Information Report (FIR No. 01/2026) at the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar. The case has been filed under relevant provisions of Indian law that address the dissemination of false information and content likely to provoke public disorder.

“Several social media profiles have been identified in connection with the case,” the police statement confirmed, adding that a thorough investigation is currently underway to identify all parties involved in the alleged misinformation campaign.

This development comes at a particularly sensitive time for Jammu and Kashmir, which continues to navigate a complex political landscape following the central government’s 2019 decision to revoke the region’s special autonomous status. Media freedom advocates have previously raised concerns about restrictions on press freedom in the territory, while authorities maintain that responsible reporting is essential to maintaining peace in the conflict-prone region.

The investigation reflects growing concerns throughout India about the role of social media in amplifying unverified information. Government officials have increasingly emphasized the potential security implications of false information spreading rapidly through digital channels, particularly in regions with histories of communal tension or civil unrest.

Kashmir’s unique position as a disputed territory claimed by both India and Pakistan has historically made it vulnerable to information warfare, with both internal and external actors occasionally attempting to leverage public sentiment through strategic communication campaigns.

Digital rights experts note that while combating genuinely harmful misinformation remains important, there is also a need for transparency in how authorities define and identify “false” or “misleading” information. Critics argue that overly broad interpretations could potentially impact legitimate journalistic activity or political speech.

The Cyber Police department in Srinagar has expanded its operations in recent years, with specialized teams now dedicated to monitoring digital communications and investigating potential violations of India’s Information Technology Act and related legislation.

Local journalists working in Kashmir have long navigated complex reporting environments, balancing pressures from various stakeholders while attempting to accurately portray events in the region. Media organizations operating in the area will likely be watching the investigation closely for indications of how authorities intend to differentiate between deliberate misinformation and legitimate reporting errors or differences in perspective.

Police officials have not yet disclosed specific examples of the alleged misinformation or named any of the news channels or individuals under investigation. They indicated that further details would be released as the investigation progresses.
