In a significant move to combat the spread of misinformation, Srinagar Police have launched a formal investigation against entities allegedly disseminating false information across the Kashmir Valley. Authorities announced Tuesday that they have registered an FIR at the Cyber Police Station targeting news channels, media outlets, and individuals involved in spreading fabricated content.
“Srinagar Police has taken serious cognisance of the deliberate circulation of false, fabricated and misleading information by certain news channels, media outlets, and individuals across electronic and social media platforms,” a police spokesperson stated. According to officials, these elements are engaged in a systematic campaign to spread distorted narratives and unverified content with the clear intention of inciting unrest and disrupting public order.
Law enforcement authorities have already identified several social media profiles connected to the alleged misinformation network and summoned the individuals behind them to the Cyber Cell for questioning. The police emphasized that investigations are actively underway, with “strict legal action” to follow against those found involved.
The crackdown comes amid heightened security concerns in the region, prompting authorities to impose significant restrictions throughout the Kashmir Valley. Educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, have been closed as a precautionary measure. The University of Kashmir announced the postponement of all examinations scheduled for Tuesday.
In addition to these measures, internet speeds across the Valley have been deliberately throttled. Officials explained this step was taken to prevent “miscreants and anti-national elements from uploading provocative content on social media” that could further destabilize the situation. Security forces have also been heavily deployed at sensitive locations to maintain law and order.
The police spokesperson described the misinformation campaigns as posing “a grave threat to peace, security, and the integrity of the nation.” Authorities issued a stern warning that spreading fake news, inflammatory content, or unverified information will invite stringent legal consequences.
“Citizens and media organisations are advised to exercise responsibility and verify facts only from official and credible sources before sharing any content that may disturb communal harmony or public order,” the spokesperson added.
This development highlights the increasingly complex challenge of managing information flows in conflict-sensitive regions. Jammu and Kashmir, which has experienced decades of insurgency and separatist movements, remains particularly vulnerable to the destabilizing effects of misinformation campaigns.
Security experts note that social media has fundamentally changed how information spreads in regions like Kashmir, allowing both genuine news and fabricated content to reach wide audiences instantly. This has created new challenges for maintaining public order, especially in areas with complex socio-political dynamics.
The crackdown also raises questions about the balance between combating harmful misinformation and protecting press freedoms and free speech. While authorities maintain these measures are necessary for public safety, civil liberties groups often express concern about the potential for such actions to restrict legitimate reporting and commentary.
Srinagar Police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining peace in the region, stating they “remain resolute in maintaining law and order and will not allow any attempt to destabilize peace in the region.” The situation continues to develop as investigations proceed.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
