Varanasi Police Take Action Against Misinformation on Manikarnika Ghat Project

Police officials in Varanasi have filed eight separate cases against individuals who allegedly circulated artificial intelligence-generated images and false claims regarding the redevelopment work at the sacred Manikarnika Ghat. The cases target those accused of deliberately spreading misleading visual content that distorts the actual progress of the renovation project.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Bansal confirmed that the cases were registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against eight individuals and several X (formerly Twitter) accounts. According to Bansal, the fabricated visuals and narratives specifically misrepresented the ongoing beautification and strengthening efforts at one of Hinduism’s most revered cremation sites.

“These posts not only misrepresented the progress of work but were designed specifically to misinform the public about a project of significant cultural and religious importance,” Bansal said in a statement to reporters.

The authorities claim that some images were deliberately altered to include Hindu deities, potentially violating religious sensibilities. Law enforcement officials believe the content was shared with the explicit intention of inflaming public sentiment and disrupting social harmony in a city known for its religious significance.

The initial complaint was filed at Chowk police station by a Tamil Nadu resident named Mano, whose company has been handling the redevelopment work at Manikarnika Ghat since November 15, 2023. The contractor alleged that an X user began sharing manipulated images late on January 16, triggering a cascade of misinformation.

“The posts created significant confusion among devotees and visitors about the actual state of the ghat’s restoration,” a police statement noted. “The digital manipulation of sacred spaces represents a new challenge for authorities tasked with protecting both physical heritage sites and their representation in digital spaces.”

Manikarnika Ghat holds profound significance in Hindu tradition as one of the most auspicious places for cremation, where it’s believed liberation from the cycle of rebirth can be attained. The renovation project aims to preserve the site’s cultural importance while improving facilities for the thousands of families who bring their deceased loved ones there each year.

The police investigation revealed that the misleading content quickly gained traction online, attracting numerous comments and reposts that amplified the false narratives. Digital forensics experts are now examining the origin and spread of these images to identify potential coordination behind the misinformation campaign.

“What began as misleading posts about construction work evolved into something more concerning,” DCP Bansal explained. “The intent appears to have been not only to offend religious sensibilities but also to promote anti-government sentiment regarding a public infrastructure project.”

The Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment is part of broader initiatives to enhance Varanasi’s infrastructure while preserving its cultural heritage. The city, considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban centers in the world, has seen increased development attention in recent years, particularly around its renowned riverfront ghats.

Authorities have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with cybercrime specialists tracking digital footprints to identify others who may have participated in creating or amplifying the misleading content.

“We’re taking this matter very seriously,” Bansal added. “Those who create or share such misleading content with malicious intent will face appropriate legal consequences. In an era where digital manipulation is increasingly sophisticated, we must be vigilant against attempts to misrepresent reality, especially concerning culturally significant sites.”

Police officials have urged the public to verify information before sharing content related to public projects, particularly those connected to religious sites where misinformation can have heightened emotional impact.
