In a decisive crackdown on digital misinformation, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) has announced intensified efforts to combat fake news related to the country’s ongoing energy emergency, warning that perpetrators will face serious legal consequences.

PCO spokesperson Gomez detailed several instances of deliberate misinformation circulating online, including fabricated claims about an “Energy Lockdown” designed to trick consumers into purchasing solar panels, a non-existent “Fuel Shortage” aimed at triggering panic buying of gasoline, diesel, and LPG, and a fictional “Emergency Lockdown” supposedly connected to a made-up “Covid-19 Cicada variant.”

“These are blatant lies and fabrications that fall under the definition of ‘false news,’ punishable by up to six months imprisonment under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code,” Gomez stated. He emphasized that because these violations occurred online, offenders face enhanced penalties under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

The announcement comes just days after the PCO issued a public warning against individuals spreading false information to advance personal or political agendas during the country’s energy crisis. The timing of these fabricated stories has raised concerns about attempts to exploit public anxiety during an already challenging period for the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Last month, the PCO launched its “Oplan Kontra Fake News” initiative through its Anti-Fake-News Desk, which has already flagged numerous suspicious posts and conducted preliminary investigations. The findings have been forwarded to the Department of Justice (DOJ), which will conduct more comprehensive inquiries to identify those responsible and pursue appropriate legal action.

Energy security experts note that false information about fuel supplies can have real-world consequences, potentially leading to unnecessary hoarding, price spikes, and actual shortages caused by panic buying. Such artificial disruptions could further strain an energy system already facing significant challenges.

“Again, we remind users of social-media platforms that the government will exercise zero tolerance for those who maliciously and deliberately spread utter falsehoods and fabricated contents,” Gomez declared. His warning reflects growing concern about the impact of targeted misinformation campaigns on critical infrastructure and public services.

The PCO has committed to intensifying its monitoring of social media platforms and information networks to identify and counter coordinated disinformation efforts. This surveillance will form part of a broader strategy to maintain energy stability and ensure citizens have access to accurate information during the crisis.

“Our ultimate obligation is to safeguard the stability of energy supply, protect consumers and uphold the public’s right to true and accurate information,” Gomez said, underlining the government’s view that combating fake news is not merely about correcting falsehoods but protecting vital national interests.

Digital rights advocates have previously raised concerns about the fine line between combating harmful misinformation and potentially restricting free speech. However, the government maintains that deliberately fabricated news that endangers public welfare falls clearly outside protected speech.

The PCO concluded its statement with a stark warning to those spreading misinformation: “Any attempt to mislead the public about energy security, supply, or pricing to sow confusion will be treated as a serious offense. We will not let you get away with a crime. We will go after you and hold you to account.”

As the energy emergency continues, authorities are urging the public to rely on official government announcements and credible news sources for accurate information about the situation.
