Pakistan’s Telecom Authority Urges Social Media Responsibility Amid Border Tensions
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued an appeal on Saturday urging citizens to exercise responsibility when using social media platforms amid what it described as a “prevailing sensitive national situation.”
In an official statement, the regulatory body advised citizens against sharing, disseminating, forwarding, or uploading any unverified, inflammatory, or misleading information that could potentially harm national interests, public order, or state institutions.
“All citizens are encouraged to share information and content that is authentic and based on official sources, and to refrain from spreading rumors and fake news,” the PTA stated, adding that individuals who share fake news may face legal consequences under applicable laws.
The telecommunications watchdog emphasized the importance of caution, maturity, and a strong sense of national responsibility to help maintain stability and public confidence during the current situation.
The PTA’s warning comes amid escalating military tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, with border clashes now entering their third day. The conflict intensified after Pakistan launched “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” (Righteous Fury) in response to what it described as unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban forces across multiple sectors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday night.
The affected areas include Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, and Bajaur sectors along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The situation has rapidly deteriorated into what some observers have characterized as an “open war” between the neighboring countries.
Pakistan’s armed forces have reported destroying several key Afghan Taliban posts during the operation, while the Pakistan Air Force conducted strikes in Afghanistan’s Kandahar, Kabul, and Paktia provinces. These operations have reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on the Afghan side.
According to Pakistani authorities, 331 Afghan Taliban fighters have been killed in the ongoing operation. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar provided an update yesterday, stating that 297 “elements of the Afghan Taliban regime” had been neutralized in the military campaign.
The conflict has also resulted in Pakistani casualties, with 12 security personnel killed and 27 others injured during the retaliatory operations, according to official sources.
The PTA’s advisory reflects growing concerns about the spread of misinformation during the conflict, which could potentially inflame tensions further or undermine public morale. Social media platforms have become important channels for news dissemination in Pakistan, but they also present challenges for information verification during sensitive security situations.
The regulatory body’s call for responsible social media use highlights the Pakistani government’s attempts to maintain information control during the military operations while managing public perception of the evolving conflict with the Taliban regime, which seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
This escalation represents one of the most serious border confrontations between Pakistan and Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power, potentially destabilizing an already volatile region that has experienced decades of conflict.
