Celebrities Face Surge in AI-Generated Fake News Across Social Media

A disturbing trend of fabricated news stories targeting celebrities and high-profile figures is gaining momentum across social media platforms, with AI-generated content making falsehoods increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality.

An investigation by the Manchester Evening News has uncovered numerous Facebook pages masquerading as legitimate news sources that consistently publish fabricated articles featuring doctored, lifelike images. Many of these pages have amassed tens of thousands of followers, creating a powerful platform for spreading misinformation.

The pages employ manipulative techniques to bolster credibility, using phrases like “verified information” and “just confirmed” to lend an air of legitimacy to entirely fictional content. These deceptive tactics have proven effective, with posts regularly generating thousands of shares, likes, and comments.

One particularly alarming example discovered by reporters involved a page with 42,000 followers that shared an AI-generated image of a well-known television presenter with a completely bald head. The post ominously described her as being in her “final days” and implied she was dying of cancer—claims with no basis in reality.

Sports figures are not immune to this trend. A page dedicated to Manchester City FC players, followed by 65,000 users, regularly posts fabricated personal tragedies involving team members and their families. These include false claims about a player’s three-year-old daughter facing a “health battle,” another player losing an unborn child, and a third undergoing a “top secret shock medical examination.”

Hannah O’Donoghue-Hobbs, a Manchester-based social media expert and founder of consultancy firm January 92, describes the situation as a crisis that “exploits trust and emotion on a major scale.” She notes that these pages are deliberately designed to appear credible while causing significant “reputational and emotional damage” to their targets.

The proliferation of such content is partially driven by social media algorithms that reward engagement regardless of accuracy, creating financial incentives for creators of sensationalist fake news. As AI technology advances, distinguishing genuine content from sophisticated fakes becomes increasingly challenging for average users.

Experts recommend several strategies for identifying fake news pages, including examining page history, scrutinizing follower counts and posting patterns, and cross-referencing stories with reputable news outlets. If a sensational story about a celebrity isn’t being reported by established media organizations, it likely lacks factual basis.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, states it is “committed to fighting the spread of false information” on its platforms. The company reports implementing new measures to address manipulated media, including adding “AI info” labels to content when it detects industry-standard AI image indicators or when users disclose they’re uploading AI-generated material.

However, critics argue that platform responses remain inadequate given the scale and sophistication of modern misinformation campaigns. The emotional and reputational damage inflicted on targets of fake news—especially when involving children or fabricated health crises—can be substantial and difficult to counteract once falsehoods have spread widely.

This growing phenomenon represents an increasingly significant challenge for social media users, platforms, and public figures alike, requiring greater vigilance and media literacy to navigate an information landscape where fiction can appear indistinguishable from fact.
