Police Crack Down on Fake Document Circulation in Cattle Transport Case
Authorities in Mangaluru have launched a criminal investigation against multiple individuals accused of creating and distributing forged documents on social media related to a cattle transport case. The Puttur Rural police registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter & Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020.
The investigation centers on the circulation of alleged cattle purchase receipts that were meant to protect individuals accused in an illegal cattle transportation case. These documents, which appeared on various social media platforms, claimed to provide legitimate proof of cattle purchases.
During their investigation, police consulted with the secretary of the Channarayapatna Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), who confirmed that the cattle market operates exclusively on Fridays. This crucial detail contradicted the information presented in the circulated receipts, helping investigators determine they had been tampered with and fabricated.
Further inquiries with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and veterinary officials revealed that no permissions had been granted for transporting cattle in the vehicle in question, adding another layer to the forgery case. These findings substantiated the authorities’ suspicion that the documents were created with deliberate intent to mislead.
Law enforcement officials have identified several suspects in the case, including the account holder of “State office SDPI Karnataka” on the social media platform ‘X’, the owner and editor of the news website Thejasnews.com, an individual identified as Sadath Bajathur, and several other social media users who allegedly participated in spreading the false information.
According to police statements, the circulation of these fabricated documents created significant tension among local communities and had the potential to trigger mob violence. The sensitive nature of cattle transport issues in the region, often intertwined with religious sentiments, makes such misinformation particularly dangerous to public order.
In response to these developments, the Puttur Rural police station filed an additional case on Wednesday under multiple sections of the BNS, including those related to forgery, spreading false information, and promoting disharmony.
The Dakshina Kannada police have issued a stern warning that stringent action will be taken against anyone spreading fake news or provocative content on social media platforms in the future. They have urged social media users to act responsibly and verify information before sharing it.
This case highlights the growing challenge authorities face in combating misinformation on social media platforms, particularly when it involves sensitive issues like cattle transportation in India. The rapid spread of false information through digital channels can quickly escalate tensions in communities and potentially lead to violence if left unchecked.
The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter & Preservation of Cattle Act, which figures prominently in this case, has been a contentious piece of legislation since its implementation in 2020. The law places strict restrictions on cattle slaughter and transport in the state, making documentation and permits critical for those involved in legitimate cattle trade.
Local officials emphasize that this enforcement action should serve as a deterrent to others who might consider using social media to spread misinformation that could disrupt public order or interfere with legal proceedings.
