South Africa’s health department has issued an urgent warning against widespread social media misinformation claiming that people living with HIV will receive a R1,200 monthly grant starting May 2026.

The National Department of Health firmly declared the information “false and misleading,” urging South Africans to exercise caution when consuming and sharing content on social media platforms.

“The claim that HIV-positive citizens will receive a R1,200 grant starting in May 2026 is false,” the department stated in an official communication shared on their social media channels. Health officials expressed concern that the fake news could create false expectations among vulnerable populations and potentially lead to scams targeting those living with HIV.

Department spokesperson Foster Mohale emphasized the importance of information verification in an era of rampant misinformation. “The public is therefore advised to always fact-check or verify information received through social media, with reliable and credible sources, before sharing,” Mohale said.

The warning comes amid South Africa’s ongoing battle with HIV, which remains one of the country’s most significant public health challenges. With approximately 7.8 million people living with HIV in South Africa—one of the highest rates globally—misinformation targeting this vulnerable population is particularly harmful.

Health experts note that false promises of financial support could potentially disrupt treatment adherence if patients become disillusioned after discovering the grants don’t exist. South Africa has made significant strides in HIV treatment and prevention, with nearly 5.5 million people receiving antiretroviral therapy through public health programs.

The department’s statement specifically cautioned against providing personal information or making payments in response to such fabricated news—a common element in scams targeting vulnerable populations. Previous misinformation campaigns have attempted to extract banking details or processing fees from people desperate for financial assistance.

While South Africa does provide various social grants through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), including disability grants that some HIV-positive individuals may qualify for based on medical criteria, there is no specific grant designated exclusively for people living with HIV.

The department reassured HIV-positive South Africans that although the grant story is fabricated, they should continue accessing the life-saving treatments available free of charge at public health facilities. “People living with HIV are urged to ignore this fake news but continue to take life-saving treatment available freely in public health facilities to live longer and healthier,” Mohale stated.

Public health communication experts point out that this incident highlights the broader challenge of health misinformation in the digital age. Social media platforms have become fertile ground for spreading unverified health claims, particularly regarding treatments, cures, and government assistance programs.

The department encouraged citizens to rely on official government communications, established news outlets, and the department’s official website and verified social media accounts for accurate information about public health initiatives and support programs.

This incident underscores the importance of digital literacy and critical consumption of information, particularly for vulnerable populations who may be more susceptible to false promises of financial support in challenging economic times.
