In a digital landscape increasingly muddied by misinformation, a troubling trend has emerged across social media platforms. An investigation by fact-checking organization Full Fact has uncovered a series of fabricated videos falsely claiming that the UK government is introducing new measures to restrict personal freedoms. These videos have collectively been shared more than 300,000 times.

Since late July, Full Fact has debunked 10 videos containing various false warnings – from claims about monitoring cash withdrawals to assertions that phone calls are being recorded. One particularly bizarre claim suggested people would be fined for sitting too long on public benches.

The misleading content has spread across multiple social media platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Threads and YouTube. While the original source of these videos remains unclear, many display TikTok account handles, suggesting they may have originated there before being reposted elsewhere.

Many of the videos are styled as legitimate news reports, with at least one using what appears to be an AI-generated news presenter. This sophisticated approach lends an air of credibility to wholly fabricated claims.

Full Fact’s investigation identified 14 different TikTok accounts involved in sharing these videos. After being contacted by the fact-checking organization, TikTok banned all 14 accounts for violating its policies against “misinformation that could cause significant harm to individuals or society.” Despite this action, similar accounts continue to emerge, posting comparable content as recently as this week.

The false claims have taken various forms. One video warned of a fictional system called “enhanced customs monitoring” that would supposedly flag UK residents who leave the country more than three times annually for tax residency checks. The video claimed travelers would trigger an alert to a non-existent “mobility oversight unit” on their fourth trip abroad. HMRC confirmed to Full Fact that no such system exists.

Other fabricated claims include assertions that the UK government is monitoring cash withdrawals over £800, recording all phone calls, tracking internet usage, and implementing a £180 fine for driving without a license – all of which are false.

Full Fact’s analysis identified at least 47 examples of such claims across different platforms, amassing 313,666 shares. However, the organization notes this likely significantly understates the true reach of this misinformation.

Many of the TikTok accounts spreading these claims positioned themselves as UK news sources, with names like “Quick.news.uk,” “Uk.news.info,” and “Ukinfo5.” Some had gathered over 10,000 followers, with their most popular videos reaching hundreds of thousands of views.

The motivation behind creating and sharing these false videos remains unclear. Social media monetization programs, which reward high engagement, have previously been linked to the rise of “rage bait” – content designed specifically to provoke anger and outrage. TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program, for example, allows creators with at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 monthly video views to earn money, though it’s unclear if the accounts identified were monetizing this content.

Interestingly, many videos included disclaimers stating they were “not intended to assert facts” but rather to “encourage reflection and debate” – possibly an attempt to circumvent platform policies. TikTok clarified to Full Fact that such disclaimers would not impact enforcement decisions when content contains “false and dangerous misinformation.”

Despite TikTok’s action against the accounts identified by Full Fact, new accounts continue to emerge posting similar misleading content. The fact-checking organization has also observed these videos appearing on Meta-owned platforms and YouTube, highlighting the cross-platform challenge in containing such misinformation.

The persistence of these false claims across multiple platforms underscores the ongoing challenge social media companies face in combating sophisticated misinformation that plays on public anxieties about government overreach and personal freedoms.
