Nigeria Customs Service Warns of Fraudulent Vehicle Auction Scam on Instagram

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a public alert regarding a fraudulent Instagram account that falsely claims affiliation with the agency to conduct vehicle auctions. The account, operating under the name “J.O. Attah Autos,” is targeting unsuspecting consumers with promises of discounted vehicles.

NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada made the announcement in an official statement released Monday in Abuja, emphasizing that the service has no connection to the fraudulent operation.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Instagram account uses the handle @nigeriacustoms001 and features images of vehicles allegedly available at below-market prices. The scammers have attached contact phone numbers to the posts to lure potential buyers into what appears to be a sophisticated fraud scheme.

“The NCS wishes to state clearly that this claim is false and did not originate from the service,” Maiwada stated in the release. “The officer whose image is being used is not involved in any car sales on social media, and the account is an act of impersonation intended to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.”

The scammers have gone to considerable lengths to appear legitimate, including using official photos of NCS personnel as profile pictures to create an illusion of authenticity. This tactic is part of a growing trend of impersonation scams targeting Nigerians, particularly in the automotive sector where consumers are often seeking deals on imported vehicles.

Vehicle import and sales remain a significant market in Nigeria, with the Customs Service playing a critical regulatory role in vehicle importation. The country has seen a surge in vehicle prices in recent years due to currency fluctuations and import restrictions, making discounted auction offers particularly attractive to budget-conscious buyers.

Security experts note that such scams have become increasingly sophisticated, with fraudsters exploiting social media platforms to reach wider audiences. Instagram’s visual format makes it particularly effective for showcasing vehicles that may not actually exist or be available for purchase.

“Members of the public are strongly advised to disregard such messages, refrain from making any payments, and report the account for further action,” Maiwada cautioned.

The NCS emphasized that citizens should only rely on the agency’s verified official communication channels for accurate information about any auctions or sales. The Customs Service occasionally conducts legitimate auctions of seized or abandoned vehicles, but these are always announced through official channels and follow strict procedural guidelines.

This warning comes amid broader concerns about digital fraud in Nigeria, which has one of Africa’s largest online populations. The Nigerian Communications Commission and other regulatory bodies have been working to combat various forms of online scams, though fraudsters continue to develop new methods to evade detection.

Financial security analysts recommend that consumers verify the legitimacy of any government-affiliated sales by contacting official phone numbers or visiting physical offices before making payments. They also advise against sending money to personal accounts for government services.

The Nigeria Customs Service has urged anyone who may have already fallen victim to this scam to report to appropriate law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which handles cases of internet fraud.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to identify those behind the fraudulent Instagram account and bring them to justice under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws, which carry significant penalties for digital impersonation and fraud.
