A police case has been registered in Hyderabad following allegations of false information being spread through social media regarding film actresses allegedly appearing in voter lists with manipulated details. The case highlights growing concerns over electoral misinformation as the Jubilee Hills by-election approaches.

The Madhuranagar Police opened an investigation after receiving a formal complaint from Syed Yahiya Kamal, who serves as both the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer for the 61-Jubilee Hills Assembly Constituency and the Assistant Municipal Commissioner for Yousufguda Circle-19 within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

According to the complaint, certain individuals have been circulating false claims on various social media platforms alleging that several film actresses were included in the Jubilee Hills electoral rolls with altered addresses, modified photographs, and invalid EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card) numbers.

In response, authorities have registered a case (Cr. No. 686/2025) under sections 336(4) and 353(1)(C) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code last year. These sections specifically address offenses related to spreading false information that could interfere with the electoral process and creating public mischief through misinformation.

Election officials have issued a stern warning to the public against believing or sharing unverified information regarding electoral rolls. They emphasized that spreading such misinformation could potentially influence the electoral process, particularly as the constituency prepares for its upcoming by-election.

“We take these matters very seriously,” said a senior election official who requested anonymity. “The integrity of our electoral rolls is fundamental to the democratic process, and attempts to undermine public trust through false information will face appropriate legal consequences.”

The Jubilee Hills constituency, one of the most affluent areas in Hyderabad, has been under increased scrutiny as it prepares for a by-election. The area is home to many celebrities, business leaders, and political figures, making it a high-profile electoral district.

This case comes amid growing concerns across India about the impact of social media misinformation on electoral processes. The Election Commission of India has been increasingly vigilant about digital misinformation campaigns, particularly those targeting voter lists or suggesting improprieties in electoral management.

Digital rights activists point out that such cases highlight the double-edged nature of social media during election periods. “While digital platforms provide unprecedented access to information, they also facilitate the rapid spread of misinformation,” noted Priya Sharma, a digital rights advocate based in Hyderabad. “The challenge for authorities is to address false information without impeding legitimate political discourse.”

The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities likely to examine digital evidence including social media posts, account information, and potential networks involved in spreading the false claims. Cybercrime experts may be brought in to trace the original sources of the misinformation.

Election officials have urged citizens to rely only on official sources for information regarding electoral rolls and voting processes. The public can verify voter information through the Election Commission’s official website or through designated help centers established throughout the constituency.

The incident serves as a reminder of the evolving challenges facing election management bodies as they work to maintain the integrity of democratic processes in an increasingly digital environment. As the investigation progresses, it may establish important precedents for how similar cases are handled in future elections across the country.
