Abu Dhabi Police Arrest 109 for Spreading Misinformation Amid Regional Tensions

Abu Dhabi Police have arrested 109 individuals for filming and disseminating misinformation about security incidents in the emirate, amid heightened regional tensions across the Middle East.

The arrests come as authorities intensify efforts to combat the spread of false information that could undermine public safety or create unnecessary panic among residents. Officials confirmed the individuals were detained for recording and sharing videos that allegedly contained misleading content about security situations in Abu Dhabi.

According to a statement from Abu Dhabi Police, the suspects violated UAE laws that prohibit the unauthorized filming of security operations and the spread of rumors that may harm public interest. The police emphasized that such actions are particularly concerning given the current volatile situation across parts of the Middle East, where tensions between Israel, Hamas, and other regional actors continue to escalate.

Colonel Pilot Thamer Gharib Al Dhaheri, Director of the Security Media Department at Abu Dhabi Police, explained that the individuals were caught filming security personnel, military installations, and sensitive areas, then sharing this footage on social media platforms with misleading captions or commentary.

“The dissemination of false information creates unnecessary fear and anxiety among community members during an already tense period in the region,” Al Dhaheri said. “We urge residents to rely only on official sources for information about security matters.”

The UAE, like many Gulf nations, has strict cybercrime laws that criminalize the spreading of misinformation, particularly on matters related to national security. Penalties for such offenses can include heavy fines and imprisonment.
