Padilla Camp Denies Fake Quote Card Claiming Senator Made Inappropriate Remarks About VP Duterte

A fabricated graphic circulating on social media falsely attributes sexually explicit comments about Vice President Sara Duterte to Senator Robinhood Padilla, a known political ally of the Duterte family.

The misleading quote card, which bears the logo of Sonshine Media Network International’s (SMNI) Nightline News program, has been officially disowned by both the network and Padilla’s team.

“This is categorically fake news,” Padilla’s office stated in a March 11 communication to VERA Files, emphasizing that the senator “will never make such remarks as he holds the vice president and all other women with deep respect.”

SMNI’s Nightline News also issued an official disclaimer on March 10, clarifying that the material “did not originate from our office and does not reflect our official statements or positions.” The network further warned that unauthorized use of their logo and materials could lead to legal action.

The fabricated graphic first appeared online on March 9, posted by a user across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The false quote attributed to Padilla contained inappropriate sexual comments about Vice President Duterte, alongside a purported date of March 6, 2026.

Fact-checking revealed the original, legitimate news card was published by Nightline News on February 20. That authentic graphic reported that Padilla had expressed willingness to serve as campaign manager for Duterte in a potential 2028 presidential bid—content significantly different from the fabricated version.

The spread of this misinformation appears contextually linked to recent political tensions. The fake quote emerged shortly after Quezon City Representative Bong Suntay faced public criticism for inappropriate comments about actress Anne Curtis during the March 3 impeachment proceedings against Vice President Duterte. During those hearings, Suntay was defending Duterte’s alleged “imagined” threat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Despite being debunked, the false content has gained considerable traction online. Three Facebook users who shared the fabricated graphic have collectively accumulated over 2,400 reactions, nearly 1,600 comments, and 126 shares. Additionally, a video featuring the bogus quote card, posted by the page “Pbbm Reaction Tv,” has garnered 577 reactions, 148 comments, 147 shares, and approximately 13,000 views.

This incident represents just one example in a pattern of disinformation surrounding Senator Padilla that fact-checkers have previously identified and debunked.

Digital misinformation experts note that fabricated quote cards have become increasingly common in the Philippine political landscape, particularly as the country approaches another election cycle. These deceptive materials often exploit existing political tensions and can rapidly spread through social media before fact-checkers can respond.

Media literacy advocates emphasize the importance of verifying information through multiple credible sources before sharing content online, particularly when claims appear inflammatory or designed to provoke strong emotional responses.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating digital disinformation in the Philippines, where social media plays a significant role in political discourse and public opinion formation.
