In a case of viral misinformation, social media users have been circulating footage claiming to show Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa displaying an image of former Telangana Chief Minister Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, widely known as KCR, in celebration of his birthday on February 17th.

The video, which has garnered significant attention online, purportedly shows the world’s tallest building illuminated with KCR’s portrait alongside patriotic phrases “Jai Telangana” and “Jai Hind.” Multiple social media accounts have shared the footage, suggesting it represents an unprecedented international honor for the Indian politician, implying recognition of his stature on the global stage.

However, fact-checking has revealed the claim to be entirely false. The video being shared is not recent at all but dates back to 2021, completely disconnecting it from any current birthday celebrations for the former chief minister. The recycling of old footage to create misleading narratives has become increasingly common on social media platforms.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation related to political figures in India, where manipulated or decontextualized media frequently circulates around significant dates or events. The Burj Khalifa, standing at 828 meters tall, has become a prestigious global landmark whose light shows are considered significant gestures of recognition or celebration.

The false narrative gained traction particularly among supporters of KCR, who founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now Bharat Rashtra Samithi) and served as the first Chief Minister of Telangana from 2014 until December 2023, following the state’s creation through the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. His leadership in the movement for a separate Telangana state has made him a significant political figure in the region.

Such misinformation surrounding political figures is not unique to India. Globally, landmark buildings like the Burj Khalifa, the Empire State Building, and other iconic structures have become subjects of manipulated images and videos to falsely suggest international recognition of various personalities and causes.

The Burj Khalifa does regularly feature displays celebrating national days, cultural events, and occasionally honors prominent global figures. However, these displays are officially announced and documented by Emaar Properties, the developer responsible for the building, making verification of authentic displays relatively straightforward.

Digital literacy experts point out that such misleading content typically spreads rapidly because it appeals to regional pride and political allegiances. The emotional connection people feel to their political leaders often overrides critical evaluation of such content before sharing.

This incident serves as a reminder for social media users to verify information before sharing, particularly content claiming to show international recognition of political figures. Simple verification methods include checking the dates of videos, cross-referencing with official announcements from the organizations involved, and consulting reliable news sources.

As India approaches various state elections throughout 2024, with national elections also on the horizon, fact-checkers anticipate an increase in such misleading content aimed at bolstering the perceived international standing of various political leaders. The recycling of old videos with new, false contexts has become a common tactic in the digital misinformation landscape.

Social media platforms continue to implement measures to flag and limit the spread of misinformation, though the speed at which such content spreads often outpaces detection systems, particularly when content is shared across multiple platforms and in various regional languages.
