False Claims of “Obama Fraud Vault” Spread Through Coordinated Disinformation Network
No evidence exists to support sensational claims that conservative commentator Candace Owens “unleashed the Obama Fraud Vault” on Fox News in December 2025, allegedly exposing $4.5 billion stolen from the Obama Foundation. The fabricated story, which circulated widely on social media, represents a sophisticated disinformation campaign traced to operators in Vietnam.
The viral posts described a dramatic scene where Owens supposedly appeared on Fox News with a “1,200-page blood-red vault labeled ‘OBAMA FRAUD EMPIRE – $4.5 BILLION STOLEN,'” making explosive allegations about misappropriated foundation funds. According to the false narrative, Owens claimed the Obama Foundation had raised $1.1 billion since 2017 but delivered only a fraction of promised funding to Chicago projects while funneling millions to offshore accounts.
Digital forensics reveals this story never occurred. No credible news outlets reported such an event, and a Google News search for “Obama fraud vault” yielded no legitimate results. Instead, the search only returned examples of the fabricated social media posts themselves.
The disinformation campaign employed a coordinated strategy across multiple platforms. Nearly identical stories appeared simultaneously across numerous Facebook pages and websites, each attributing the same dramatic “fraud vault” revelation to different conservative figures including Ben Shapiro, Jeanine Pirro, Greg Gutfeld, and Senator John Kennedy. Each post featured similar visuals showing the alleged commentator holding a sign reading “Obama is concealing horrific crimes. Do you want me to release classified documents Obama? Be honest.”
Meta’s transparency data, accessible through the “About” section of these Facebook pages, revealed all were administered from Vietnam. This connection is particularly significant, as fact-checkers have previously identified Vietnam as the source of an extensive network producing AI-generated false content. Lead Stories alone has published over 70 fact-check articles addressing content from this operation.
The posts contained numerous implausible claims designed to trigger emotional responses, including allegations that the Obama Foundation promised $300 million for Chicago children’s programs but delivered only $1 million, that $184 million meant for African youth programs went “straight to Caymans,” and that $93 million went to “consulting fees” with “zero deliverables.”
The fabricated story even included dramatic flourishes about the supposed broadcast’s impact, claiming “Fox hit 212 million viewers” and that a hashtag “#OwensObamaVault exploded to 6.9 BILLION posts in 41 minutes” – metrics that are both technically impossible and wildly inflated.
This case exemplifies a growing trend of sophisticated disinformation campaigns using fabricated scenarios involving public figures to generate clicks, engagement, and advertising revenue. The networks often deploy AI-generated content across dozens or hundreds of websites and social media pages simultaneously.
Media literacy experts recommend several strategies to identify such fraudulent content, including checking whether major news outlets have reported the alleged events, looking for emotional language and implausible claims, investigating page transparency information, and being wary of sites overloaded with advertisements and pop-ups.
The Obama Foundation has not issued an official response to these specific fabricated claims, as responding to such obvious disinformation would only lend it undeserved credibility.
