US Army Arrival Video Falsely Claims 5,000 Troops Deployed to Philippines

A viral YouTube video claiming to show the recent arrival of 5,000 “elite” US troops at Subic Bay in the Philippines has been debunked as false. The misleading video, which has garnered over 18,540 views, combines footage from unrelated military operations and digitally inserts Philippine flags to create the appearance of a major US deployment to the Southeast Asian nation.

The video, posted on January 5, bears the sensational title “China Shocked! 5,000 Elite US Troops Arrive in Subic Bay, Philippines.” It displays various clips of military personnel disembarking from planes, waiting at airstrips, and boarding buses, with Philippine flags prominently displayed on vehicles and buildings throughout the footage.

According to the video’s description, the purported deployment represents “a significant increase in military cooperation between the two countries” and is allegedly part of “large-scale joint exercises and efforts to strengthen defense readiness in the Indo-Pacific region.”

However, fact-checking reveals the footage is actually a deceptive compilation of clips from entirely different military operations. The first segment was taken from a US 173rd Airborne Brigade website post dated July 21, 2025, showing the arrival of the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. These troops were participating in Agile Spirit 25, a NATO joint training exercise that included forces from Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine – but not the Philippines.

The second segment comes from a video originally posted by YouTube channel MIL3010 on August 20, 2021. This footage shows paratroopers from the US Army’s 82nd Division being deployed to Afghanistan to assist with the evacuation of embassy staff in Kabul following the Taliban takeover. This emergency operation occurred just weeks before the complete US military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which concluded on August 30, 2021, when Major General Chris Donahue, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, became the last American soldier to leave Afghan soil.

The fabricated nature of the video becomes even more apparent upon closer inspection, which reveals that Philippine flags were digitally added to buildings and vehicles to create the false impression that the footage was captured in the Philippines.

This misleading content emerges amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea region, where the Philippines and China have been engaged in territorial disputes. The United States and the Philippines do maintain a mutual defense treaty and regularly conduct joint military exercises, but no credible media outlets or government agencies have reported any recent arrival of 5,000 US troops at Subic Bay.

The video appears designed to provoke anxiety about escalating military activities in a sensitive geopolitical region. It exemplifies how misleading content can be crafted by repurposing authentic footage from different contexts and adding fabricated elements to support false narratives.

Social media users are encouraged to verify information from official government sources and established news organizations before accepting claims about significant military deployments that could potentially impact regional stability and international relations.
