Recent viral claims of a major US naval presence in Subic Bay, Philippines have been debunked as false by fact-checkers. A YouTube video titled “U.S. Navy Arrives in Force: Multiple Warships Spotted at Subic Bay, Philippines Left Stunned” has garnered over 52,000 views since its January 16 posting, but analysis confirms the footage is artificially generated.
The video, which shows supposed American troops aboard warships, operating hovercrafts, and landing on beaches, was flagged by multiple AI detection tools. Hive Moderation identified the content as 99.9% likely to be AI-generated, while Undetectable AI assessed it as “likely generated by AI” with 96% confidence.
Despite containing a disclaimer in its description acknowledging its artificial nature, the video’s comment section reveals many viewers believed the content to be authentic. The channel behind the post further muddied the waters by failing to reiterate the AI disclosure when responding to comments thanking the US government for the purported troop deployment.
The misleading video emerges against a backdrop of genuine military cooperation between the Philippines and the United States. According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the two nations conducted a bilateral maritime cooperative activity in Bajo de Masinloc from January 25 to 26, 2026. This exercise featured the USS John Finn, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, alongside an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter.
The USS John Finn was indeed present in Subic Bay during an earlier maritime cooperative activity held from September 11 to 13, 2025. However, the last significant multi-vessel US naval presence in the area occurred during the Multilateral Maritime Event of Balikatan Exercise 2025, conducted between April 24 and 29, 2025. That exercise incorporated two American vessels – the USS Savannah and USS Comstock – alongside naval and air assets from the Philippines and Japan.
The circulation of such deceptive content comes at a sensitive time for Philippine-US relations. In recent years, the two countries have strengthened their military alliance amid growing tensions in the South China Sea, with increased joint exercises and expanded defense agreements. Subic Bay itself holds historical significance as a former American naval base that operated for nearly a century until its closure in 1992.
Misinformation regarding military movements can potentially inflame regional tensions and create false impressions about the nature and scale of bilateral cooperation. The video’s spread highlights the growing challenge of AI-generated content being passed off as legitimate news, particularly when concerning sensitive geopolitical and military matters.
Fact-checkers continue to monitor suspicious content across social media platforms, encouraging users to report dubious claims to initiatives like #FactsFirstPH to combat the spread of disinformation.
