The scuba diving video circulating on social media as Zubeen Garg’s “last moments” has been definitively proven false through a comprehensive fact-check by Vishvas News. The investigation revealed that the viral footage, which shows two people scuba diving underwater, has no connection to the renowned singer’s death.
Zubeen Garg, a celebrated artist, passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, while traveling there for a scheduled event. His body was later cremated with full state honors in Guwahati on September 23, 2025. Following his death, social media platforms saw an influx of content purportedly related to the singer, including the diving video in question.
The misleading post, which was shared by a Facebook user with the caption “Om Shanti Zubeen Garg. The legend’s last video. I am very ashamed to share this video of you,” gained traction online as users shared it without verification.
Vishvas News conducted a methodical investigation by extracting keyframes from the video and performing reverse image searches. These searches led to multiple earlier instances of the same footage, with the earliest traced version appearing on an Instagram account called ‘Stop the Sun’ on May 14, 2024 – well before Garg’s death in September 2025.
The original video, according to the Instagram post, shows a training dive where an instructor reaches a depth of 78 meters and slowly ascends. During the ascent, the diver briefly loses consciousness – a moment that was misappropriated in the misleading posts. The Instagram caption had clarified this was an intentional training exercise performed without fins and conducted safely under supervision.
To verify the origin of the footage, fact-checkers contacted the Instagram account owner, Marat Tukhvatullin, who confirmed: “In this video, he is there as a trainer, and it has no connection to anyone’s death.” The same footage was also found on a YouTube channel named ‘Flash Tube’ from July 31, 2024, and on a Facebook page from August 16, 2024.
This case highlights a concerning trend of misinformation following celebrity deaths, where unrelated content is often repurposed and shared with false context, potentially causing additional distress to grieving fans and family members.
The investigation serves as a reminder of the importance of verification before sharing content on social media, particularly during emotionally charged events like a public figure’s death. The Facebook user who shared the false claim had a modest following of 413 followers, yet the post managed to gain enough traction to warrant a formal fact-check.
Following Zubeen Garg’s death, an FIR was registered against several individuals, though details about this legal action were not elaborated upon in the original investigation.
This incident demonstrates how quickly misinformation can spread during high-profile events and underscores the value of professional fact-checking organizations in maintaining information integrity in the digital age.
