Tennis Star Alex Eala Falsely Quoted in Fabricated Controversy with Senator Hontiveros

A wave of misinformation has spread across social media platforms falsely claiming that Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala rebuffed Senator Risa Hontiveros over an alleged request to endorse LGBT advocacy at international tournaments. Fact-checking organization VERA Files has determined these claims are entirely fabricated.

The false narrative began circulating on March 30 when several Facebook pages published posts featuring photos of both Eala and Hontiveros. These posts included an alleged “breaking news” story claiming Eala had told the senator, “I am an athlete, not a tool for your political agenda,” when supposedly asked to allow her image to be used for LGBT advocacy initiatives.

According to the fabricated story, Eala reportedly delivered “a quick 15-second statement that ended the matter,” leaving Hontiveros “infuriated” while earning praise from fans. However, VERA Files found no credible evidence of any such interaction between the athlete and the legislator.

Senator Hontiveros directly addressed the false claims in an April 1 Facebook post, stating “STOP THE LIES!” and explicitly denying that she had ever requested such endorsements from the young tennis star. A thorough search by fact-checkers revealed no credible media reports or statements on Eala’s official social media accounts corroborating the alleged exchange.

Further investigation showed that while some posts used authentic photos of both women, others published by former broadcaster Jay Sonza and another page on April 1 contained images that appear to be AI-generated. Two separate artificial intelligence detection tools flagged these images as deepfakes, adding another troubling dimension to the spread of misinformation.

This isn’t the first time either woman has been targeted by disinformation campaigns. VERA Files notes that both Hontiveros, a prominent progressive voice in the Philippine Senate, and Eala, one of the country’s rising sports stars, have frequently been subjects of debunked claims in recent years.

The fabricated controversy gained significant traction online, with posts from multiple Facebook pages collectively amassing over 33,500 reactions, 6,300 comments, and 2,500 shares. Two of these pages—”Tennis Spot” and “Tennis Network”—were created relatively recently and are managed by individuals based in Vietnam, according to VERA Files’ investigation, raising questions about the origins and motivations behind the disinformation campaign.

The incident highlights the continuing challenge of combating political disinformation in the Philippines, particularly when it involves public figures from different spheres. Politicians and celebrities often find themselves unwitting characters in manufactured controversies designed to generate engagement on social media platforms.

Media literacy experts point out that such fabricated exchanges between public figures are increasingly common tactics in disinformation campaigns, designed to capitalize on existing political divisions while exploiting the popularity of non-political figures like athletes to extend their reach.

The case serves as a reminder for social media users to verify information through multiple reliable sources before sharing content, especially those claiming to report “breaking news” about confrontations between public figures that don’t appear in mainstream media outlets.
