AI-Manipulated Video Falsely Shows Shah Rukh Khan Joining AIMIM

A video circulating widely on social media appearing to show Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan announcing his entry into politics with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party has been confirmed as a deepfake.

The investigation began with a comprehensive keyword search to identify any credible reports of Khan making such a political announcement. No legitimate news sources or official statements from either Khan or AIMIM were found to substantiate the claim.

Upon closer technical examination, the video raised several red flags. Researchers extracted multiple screenshots from the clip and conducted reverse image searches, which failed to locate the original source material. This absence of verifiable origin is often the first indicator of manipulated content.

The fact-checking team then manually reviewed Khan’s official social media accounts to identify any similar authentic videos that might have been manipulated. During this process, investigators discovered a genuine clip from April 2023 showing Khan at an Eid celebration in Dubai. The visual similarities between this authentic footage and the manipulated video suggested the Dubai clip likely served as the base material for creating the deepfake.

To confirm suspicions, the team submitted the video to Deepfake-O-Meter, a specialized AI detection tool. The analysis definitively revealed AI manipulation markers throughout the footage, confirming that advanced synthetic media technology had been used to create false content.

This incident highlights the growing sophistication of deepfake technology and its potential to spread misinformation, particularly around high-profile celebrities and political matters. The technology allows bad actors to manipulate video and audio to make it appear that public figures are saying or doing things they never did.

Khan, one of India’s most influential celebrities with a career spanning three decades and over 80 films, has historically maintained a careful distance from direct political involvement despite occasionally commenting on social issues. His enormous fan following—with over 45 million Twitter followers and films grossing billions worldwide—makes him a particularly valuable target for those seeking to create viral misinformation.

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, is a significant political party particularly strong in certain regions including Hyderabad. The false association of a major celebrity like Khan with the party could potentially influence public perception and political narratives, especially among his massive fan base.

The spread of this deepfake comes amid growing concerns globally about AI-generated misinformation in politics. India, with its diverse and complex political landscape and upcoming elections in several states, presents a particularly vulnerable environment for such technological manipulation.

Media literacy experts warn that as AI technology becomes more accessible, distinguishing between authentic and manipulated content will become increasingly challenging for the average social media user. They recommend verifying news through multiple credible sources before sharing and watching for unusual visual or audio inconsistencies that might indicate manipulation.

Both government agencies and social media platforms have been working to develop more robust detection methods and policies to counter deepfakes, but the technology continues to advance rapidly, creating an ongoing challenge for those working to maintain information integrity in the digital age.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of critical media consumption as technology continues to blur the line between reality and fiction in our information ecosystem.
