In a heated press conference on February 3, 2026, Rep. Ted Lieu, vice chair of the Democratic Caucus in the U.S. House, made serious allegations regarding former President Donald Trump’s connection to the Jeffrey Epstein case, but his comments have since been misrepresented on social media.

During the press conference, Lieu criticized Republicans for subpoenaing Bill and Hillary Clinton, suggesting it was a diversionary tactic to shift attention away from Trump’s alleged ties to Epstein. “Donald Trump is in the Epstein files thousands and thousands of times,” Lieu stated. “In those files, there’s highly disturbing allegations of Donald Trump raping children, of Donald Trump threatening to kill children. So I encourage the press to go look at these allegations.”

Contrary to claims spreading online, particularly from an X account called @allenanalysis, Lieu did not state that “full, unreleased Epstein files show Donald Trump raping children.” The California Democrat was referring to allegations contained in already available documents and was urging journalists to investigate these claims further.

The mischaracterization of Lieu’s comments gained traction after the @allenanalysis account posted a video of the press conference with the caption: “MAJOR BOMBSHELL: Ted Lieu says the full, unreleased Epstein files show Donald Trump R*PING children. That’s what’s being hidden. That’s why the files stay sealed. That’s why there are no arrests. Release everything. Let the truth come out. Or RESIGN!”

This description significantly distorts Lieu’s actual statements. At no point did he claim to have seen unreleased files or assert that such files definitively show Trump committing these acts. Rather, he referenced “highly disturbing allegations” contained in existing documents.

Lieu’s criticism extended beyond Trump to include Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. The congressman accused Blanche of misinterpreting federal sex trafficking law, stating, “If Jeffrey Epstein was human trafficking minors for these sex parties and you show up and patronize the establishment at that party, yes, you’re guilty, because patronizing is part of the law—the federal sex trafficking law.”

The congressman also condemned the Department of Justice for what he described as “the biggest privacy violation in history,” referring to the release of unredacted photos of minors who were victims of sex trafficking. He further criticized Blanche’s handling of Ghislaine Maxwell’s case, claiming the Deputy Attorney General met with Maxwell, transferred her to a minimum-security prison, and “got a puppy for her.” Based on these concerns, Lieu called for Blanche’s resignation.

The Epstein case continues to be politically charged, with documents related to the disgraced financier’s network regularly becoming fodder for partisan attacks. Jeffrey Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, had connections to numerous high-profile figures across the political spectrum, including both Trump and former President Bill Clinton.

The misleading characterization of Lieu’s statements highlights the ongoing challenge of information integrity in the digital age, particularly regarding sensitive legal and political matters. As investigations continue and more documents potentially become public, distinguishing between allegations, evidence, and misrepresentations remains crucial for public understanding of this complex case.
