Interior Secretary Remulla Remains in Cabinet Despite False Resignation Claims
Interior Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla has not resigned from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Cabinet, contrary to circulating claims on social media. The allegations, which suggested Remulla had withdrawn support from the administration amid the ongoing flood control scandal, have been verified as false.
A YouTube video posted on January 20 with over 40,000 views made the unfounded assertion that Cabinet members were abandoning the Marcos administration “one by one,” specifically claiming that Remulla had resigned and “abandoned” the President. The video’s thumbnail featured an image of Remulla supposedly holding a document, with text suggesting he had “left the palace” and “abandoned Bongbong.”
The video’s narrator further implied that Remulla would arrest anyone implicated in the anomalous flood control projects without political bias, including potentially the President himself, after former lawmaker Zaldy Co allegedly linked Marcos to the scandal.
However, official records confirm that Remulla remains the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary, as reflected on the department’s official website. Far from withdrawing support, Remulla publicly backed the President during a January 13 press briefing, where he stated that Marcos is working to strengthen local governments and restore public trust in the wake of the flood control controversy.
“Now that we have seen what is wrong with our budget, what is wrong with our government, our President is doing everything to level the playing field — he is correcting the wrongs in the Department of Public Works and Highways, he is correcting the wrongs in the national government, and he is strengthening local government,” Remulla said during the briefing.
The Interior Secretary recently revealed alleged bribery attempts targeting both himself and his brother, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, amid investigations into the flood control scandal. Malacañang responded that President Marcos was displeased with these reports but expressed full confidence in the Remulla brothers.
The false resignation claim appears to be connected to the broader flood control scandal that has rocked the Philippines. In November 2025, Zaldy Co released video statements alleging that Marcos and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez directed approximately P100 billion in budget insertions for flood control projects and received P56 billion in kickbacks. Co further claimed he personally delivered P1 billion in cash to an intermediary for the President in December 2024.
President Marcos has firmly rejected these allegations, stating they carry little weight unless made under oath in the Philippines. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro dismissed Co’s claims as “lies” unsupported by evidence.
The corruption investigation has already led to significant consequences, with 10 individuals jailed in connection with the flood control cases by late December 2025. Co and several others implicated in the scandal remain at large. The most recent high-profile arrest was Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., who surrendered on January 19 facing charges related to a P92.8-million ghost flood control project in Bulacan.
As investigations continue, the spread of misinformation regarding Cabinet resignations highlights the contentious political environment surrounding the scandal. Authorities continue to urge the public to verify information through official channels and remain vigilant against disinformation.
