AI-Generated Video of Python in Train Compartment Spreads Misleadingly on Social Media

A viral video purportedly showing a python hanging from a luggage rack above a sleeping child in a crowded train coach in Madhya Pradesh has been determined to be an AI-generated creation, not an actual incident as claimed in widespread social media posts.

The deceptive clip, which depicts a large snake suspended above an unsuspecting child while fellow passengers appear alarmed, gained significant traction online with claims that it represented a genuine wildlife encounter on an Indian Railways train.

When investigating the origins of the footage, our team divided the viral clip into multiple screenshots and conducted reverse image searches. These searches yielded no credible news reports or official statements documenting such an incident taking place in Madhya Pradesh or anywhere else in India’s extensive rail network.

Further investigation traced the video to Instagram, where it was posted by Shawn Arranha, who identifies as a digital creator and director in his profile. Significantly, Arranha’s post included hashtags such as “#sora” and “#sora2” – direct references to Sora AI, a sophisticated text-to-video artificial intelligence generator developed by OpenAI that can create realistic-looking footage from written descriptions.

The inclusion of these tags strongly suggests the creator intended to identify the content as artificially generated rather than documentary footage, though this context was lost as the video circulated more widely across various platforms.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated content on social media. As text-to-video technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, the visual cues that might once have helped viewers identify artificial content are becoming less obvious, creating fertile ground for misinformation.

While this particular snake encounter was fabricated, real incidents involving wildlife on Indian trains do occasionally occur. In November last year, passengers on the Andaman Express experienced genuine panic when a python was discovered inside a train compartment. That verified incident received official coverage from transportation authorities and legitimate news outlets.

Indian Railways, which operates one of the world’s largest rail networks carrying over 23 million passengers daily, has established protocols for handling wildlife encounters on trains. Such incidents, while rare, are taken seriously due to safety concerns for both passengers and the animals involved.

Wildlife experts note that snakes occasionally find their way onto trains, particularly in rural stations during monsoon seasons when flooding may displace reptiles from their natural habitats. In genuine cases, railway staff typically engage local forest officials or wildlife handlers to safely remove and relocate the animals.

The spread of this artificial content as purported news underscores the importance of critical media literacy in the age of AI-generated imagery. Viewers are increasingly encouraged to verify dramatic footage through multiple credible sources before accepting it as authentic documentation of events.

We have reached out to the creator for comment on the intention behind the video and will update this report upon receiving a response. In the meantime, social media platforms continue to grapple with policy questions surrounding the labeling and identification of AI-generated content that might be mistaken for reality.
