Recent social media posts have circulated a video of Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly threatening the West amid the escalating US-Israel conflict with Iran, but fact-checkers have determined the footage is from 2023 and unrelated to current Middle East tensions.

The 48-second clip, which began circulating widely on Sunday, shows Putin speaking at an event, followed by footage of him meeting with foreign dignitaries. The caption accompanying the video reads: “Vladimir Putin’s harsh message to the West (Trump): Who do you think you are? Constantly saying: You must … You have to … We are warning you … Who even are you? It is clear they have forgotten their place. Perhaps it is time to remind them.”

The video gained significant traction across multiple platforms, accumulating hundreds of thousands of views. One verified X account describing itself as a digital media outlet covering politics shared the video, generating 286,000 views. Pro-Iranian accounts on X further amplified the clip, collectively adding another 273,400 views. The video and accompanying claims also spread to Facebook and Instagram.

Given the current geopolitical climate, the video quickly generated interest among viewers concerned about Russia’s potential involvement in the ongoing Middle East conflict. The US-Israel confrontation with Iran has intensified since February 28, when joint US-Israeli forces struck Iranian military, nuclear, and leadership targets. Iran responded by launching missiles and drones toward Israel, US military installations, and allied infrastructure throughout the Middle East.

The Iranian retaliation has targeted Gulf countries and strategic energy facilities, including ports and oil installations, creating regional instability and disrupting global energy markets. Gulf states have become increasingly vulnerable due to their hosting of US military assets and their crucial role in global energy supply chains.

Fact-checkers initiated an investigation into the Putin video due to its rapid spread and the public’s interest in understanding Russia’s stance on the conflict. A reverse image search revealed that the footage originated from Putin’s address at the 20th Annual Valdai International Discussion Club on October 5, 2023, in Sochi, Russia.

Multiple credible sources confirmed the timing and context of the speech. Voice of America published a report on October 5, 2023, titled “Russia Has Tested Nuclear-Powered Missile, Could Revoke Atomic Test Ban, Putin Says,” featuring images that match the viral video. The European Security and Defence website also published similar imagery with attribution to the 2023 Valdai meeting.

The official transcript of Putin’s address, published on the Valdai Discussion Club website, contains the exact phrasing used in the video. In his speech, Putin criticized Western powers, particularly the United States, saying: “All the time we hear, ‘you must’, ‘you are obligated’, ‘we are seriously warning you’. Who are you to do that? What right do you have to warn others? This is just amazing. Maybe those who say all this should get rid of their arrogance and stop behaving in such a way towards the global community.”

During this same address, Putin announced Russia had successfully tested the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, a significant development in Russian military capabilities that garnered international attention at the time.

The circulation of this outdated footage amid current tensions highlights the challenges of information verification during international crises. Social media platforms have become breeding grounds for misleading content that can shape public perception of global events and potentially escalate tensions.

This fact check was originally conducted by iVerify Pakistan, a joint project of CEJ-IBA and the United Nations Development Programme, which determined the claim to be misleading as the viral clip is from October 2023 and unrelated to the current Middle East conflict.
