In early October 2025, a viral video purportedly showing police officers chasing a person in a pickle costume sparked widespread attention across social media platforms. The footage, which appeared to be captured from a helicopter or drone perspective, quickly accumulated thousands of shares on YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter).

One X user who shared the video commented: “Trump’s America, where giant frogs intimidate ICE agents and giant pickles give cops a run for their money,” connecting the unusual scene to ongoing political tensions in the United States.

However, fact-checkers have confirmed the video is entirely fabricated, created using artificial intelligence technology rather than depicting an actual police chase.

The video emerged amid a backdrop of genuine protests occurring across the country, particularly in Portland, Oregon, where demonstrators wearing inflatable frog costumes had confronted Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during demonstrations against the Trump administration. These protests intensified following President Trump’s attempts to deploy National Guard troops to Portland, a city he described as “war-ravaged” — a characterization that both Portland’s police chief and residents publicly disputed according to reports from ABC News and CNN.

Several technical elements clearly indicate the video’s artificial nature. Most notably, the footage features a periodically flashing watermark for Sora, an advanced AI video generation system developed by OpenAI. The company had just launched Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, with a policy requiring all AI-generated content to carry visible watermarks distinguishing it from authentic footage.

The video’s most widely shared version came from a TikTok account (@policebodycam6741) that regularly posts fabricated clips showing confrontations between law enforcement and individuals in food costumes — or in some cases, animated food items with human features. The account even published what appeared to be follow-up footage of the same pickle police chase, all bearing the telltale Sora watermark.

Visual inconsistencies further confirm the video’s artificial creation. Close examination reveals numerous physical impossibilities and rendering errors: the police car’s rear door closes without any visible mechanism or person operating it; an officer exits the vehicle through a front door that opens despite no hand reaching for the handle; and perhaps most tellingly, the pickle costume’s right leg occasionally glitches between green fabric and human skin tones, sometimes disappearing entirely.

This fake video represents part of a growing trend of increasingly sophisticated AI-generated content spreading across social platforms. The technology’s rapid advancement has made it progressively more challenging for viewers to distinguish between authentic and artificial footage, particularly when consumed through brief social media clips shared without context.

Fact-checking organizations have identified other instances of Sora-created content being misrepresented as real events, including another recent fabrication showing a protester being pepper-sprayed by a soldier who referred to himself as “Sergeant Pepper.”

The pickle chase video’s widespread circulation highlights growing concerns among media literacy experts about the potential for AI-generated content to mislead the public, particularly during politically charged periods. As AI video generation technology becomes more accessible and its outputs more convincing, the need for critical media consumption and reliable verification methods grows increasingly important.

A federal judge had temporarily blocked the Trump administration from sending National Guard troops to Oregon just days before this fake video began circulating, potentially contributing to its resonance within ongoing national discussions about protest responses and law enforcement tactics.
